Budget — Mount Kilimanjaro

The Kilimanjaro climb is a substantial investment, but the cost is broadly justified by the complex logistics and high park fees.

Park fees are set by the Kilimanjaro National Park authorities and represent the incompressible part of the budget. 2026 rates for non-residents: entry 70 USD/day/person, camping 50 USD/day/person (Lemosho, Machame, Rongai, Northern Circuit) or hut 60 USD/night (Marangu only), rescue fee 20 USD/person (one-time payment, covers possibility of evacuation), plus 18% VAT on the whole. For a Lemosho 8-day climb, park fees alone represent around 1,200 USD/person.

Operator packages cover all logistics. Low-cost operators (Zara Tours, African Walking Company budget): 1,500-2,000 USD/person for Lemosho 8 days. Warning: safety sometimes compromised, porters often poorly paid and overloaded. Serious KPAP-referenced operators: Altezza Travel (2,200-2,800 USD), Climbing Kilimanjaro (2,400-3,000 USD), Kandoo Adventures (2,500-3,200 USD), Tusker Trail (2,800-3,500 USD).

Tips are expected and non-negotiable. Standard scale for Lemosho 7-8 days: lead guide 20-25 USD/day, assistant guide 15-20 USD/day, cook 12-15 USD/day, porters 10-12 USD/day/porter. For a typical team of 1 guide + 1 assistant + 1 cook + 4 porters over 8 days, count around 200-280 USD/trekker in tips.

The altitude trek insurance is essential (€50-150/person depending on coverage). Imperatively check: trekking coverage above 4,000 m (most standard travel insurances don't cover), helicopter evacuation from the summit (3,000-5,000 USD if you pay yourself), medical repatriation.

Estimated total budget for Lemosho 8 days with serious operator, including international flight from Europe: 4,500-6,500 USD/person.
