The Hill Country follows a tropical mountain climate that differs sharply from that of the plains and coasts. The dry season runs from January to April, followed by a long wet season from May to December, with particularly heavy rains between June and September (south-west monsoon) and again between October and November (inter-monsoon).
January, February and March are the ideal months for a visit. Temperatures are cool but pleasant (10-22 °C depending on altitude), showers are rare, and visibility from the viewpoints (Lipton's Seat, World's End, Adam's Peak) is excellent before 9 a.m. It is also the high pilgrimage season for Adam's Peak, with the illuminated trail creating a unique atmosphere. Book the Kandy-Ella train and Ella guesthouses several weeks in advance.
April marks the dry heat peak on the plains, but the Hill Country remains comfortable. The Sinhalese and Tamil New Year festival (mid-April) brings the towns to life, and it is also the end of the Adam's Peak climbing season.
May and June correspond to the inter-monsoon: frequent but short showers, romantic fog draping the plantations, crowds notably thinner. A good period for flexible travellers wanting to avoid the high season.
July and August are the full south-west monsoon, with sustained rain and often zero visibility on the summits. The Adam's Peak trail is closed for safety. Horton Plains hikes are often disappointing (permanent fog). Prices at their lowest, ideal for tight budgets that tolerate rain.
September and October begin a gradual clearing but the November inter-monsoon brings new rains. The region becomes practicable again from late November, with the official opening of the Adam's Peak season on 1 December for Unduvap Poya. December marks the return of high season with year-end festivities, particularly expensive at Nuwara Eliya (colonial bungalows fill six months ahead for Christmas and New Year's Day).
