The Hill Country is mainly experienced as a succession of contemplative experiences: train journeys, highland hikes, factory visits and nights in colonial bungalows.
The Kandy-Ella panoramic train is the flagship experience, an absolute must at least on the Nanu Oya-Ella section (3h30, 100 km of breathtaking scenery). Prefer the descending direction (Nuwara Eliya to Ella) for the afternoon light. Book Class 1 or 2 (air-conditioned, mandatory reservation 30 days ahead) or try unreserved Class 2 or 3 for a more authentic experience standing at the open door.
In Nuwara Eliya, the British colonial atmosphere is best tasted at the Grand Hotel (English high tea in a Victorian lounge), at Lake Gregory (boating and walks), in Victoria Park and on the golf course (one of Asia's oldest, 1889). Visit Pedro Tea Estate to understand the process. At sunrise, head for Horton Plains and the World's End hike (9 km, 3-4h) — mandatory departure before 6 a.m. for visibility.
In Ella, the must-dos fit into four points: Little Adam's Peak (easy 1h one-way trail, mythical sunrise at the summit); the Nine Arch Bridge (30 min walk or by tuk-tuk, ideally at the 6.25 or 9.30 a.m. train passage); Ella Rock (a more demanding 4h round-trip hike, spectacular panorama); and Ravana Falls accessible from the main road. In the evening, Ella's main street comes alive with bars and restaurants — Cafe Chill, AK Ristoro and Matey Hut are the must-go addresses.
In Haputale, the flagship attraction is Lipton's Seat (1,970 m), the viewpoint where Sir Thomas Lipton came to contemplate his plantations at the end of the 19th century. Going up by tuk-tuk at sunrise (departure 4.30 a.m.) and walking back down through the tea bushes (7 km, 2h) crossing pluckers at work is one of the most beautiful experiences in the Hill Country. The Dambatenne Tea Factory below, founded by Lipton in 1890, offers exceptional guided tours.
The Adam's Peak climb is prepared from Dalhousie or Nallathanniya, the starting point of the illuminated trail. Departure around 2 a.m., 3-4 hours of walking up a staircase of 5,200 steps among pilgrims, arrival at the summit for sunrise (6-6.30 a.m. depending on the season). The image of the triangular shadow of the peak projected over the sea of clouds ranks among the most striking spiritual experiences in Asia.
