The Hill Country occupies the central and mountainous part of Sri Lanka, an undulating high plateau peaking at 2,524 metres at Pidurutalagala and entirely dedicated, for one hundred and fifty years, to tea production. The region extends from Kandy (northern gateway, 500 m elevation) down to Ella and Haputale (1,200 m) via Nuwara Eliya (1,880 m) and the summits of Adam's Peak (2,243 m) and Horton Plains (2,100 m).
For a short trip (3 days), focus on the Kandy-Ella axis by train (early departure from Kandy or Nanu Oya), with 2 nights in Ella for the hikes (Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, Nine Arch Bridge mid-morning, Ella Rock in the afternoon). This is the simplest and most immersive option to taste the Hill Country without spreading thin.
Over 5 days, the ideal itinerary divides into three stops: Nuwara Eliya (1-2 nights for Horton Plains and a tea factory visit), Ella (2 nights for hikes and the bridge) and Haputale or Dalhousie (1 night for Lipton's Seat or Adam's Peak). The train handles the Nuwara Eliya-Ella link exceptionally (3h30 of wonder), while other legs are done in a private car with driver (USD 60/day).
With 7 days and more, integrate the lesser-known plantations of the Bogawantalawa Valley (Norwood, Castlereagh, Bogawantalawa), the Bambarakanda Falls (the country's highest, 263 m) and Diyaluma Falls (the most spectacular), and a night in a restored colonial bungalow such as Ceylon Tea Trails (Bogawantalawa) or Strathdon Bungalow in Hatton. The Hill Country then combines perfectly with the South Coast (Yala, Mirissa, Galle) by descending the Ella-Matara line.
