Frequently asked questions

How many days for Lima?+
Minimum 2 nights to enjoy gastronomy (2 world top restaurants on 2 different evenings), visit Miraflores/Barranco and UNESCO historic centre + Larco Museum. Ideally 3 nights not to rush. If you only have 1 night (transit), prioritize 1 top restaurant + Miraflores Parque Kennedy. In 10 total Peru days, plan Lima 2 nights + Cusco-Sacred Valley-Machu Picchu 5-6 nights + return. In 14 days, add Arequipa-Colca-Titicaca (5-6 nights) or Tambopata Amazon (3-4 nights). In 21 days, Lima 3 nights + Paracas/Huacachina/Nazca 3-4 nights + Arequipa-Colca-Titicaca 5-6 nights + Cusco-Sacred Valley-Machu Picchu 5-6 nights + Amazon 3-4 nights.
What world top restaurants in Lima?+
Lima hosts 3 restaurants in the World's 50 Best Restaurants top 10. Central (Virgilio Martínez, world #1 in 2023, Barranco): 17-course 'Mater' tasting menu exploring Peru's altitudes (from ocean floor to Andean peaks), €250-400/person excluding drinks, to book 3-6 months ahead. Maido (Mitsuharu Tsumura 'Micha', world top 10, Miraflores): nikkei cuisine (Peruvian-Japanese, world ambassador), tasting menu €200-350, 2-3 month wait. Kjolle (Pía León, Virgilio Martínez's partner, world top 30, Barranco): contemporary Peruvian cuisine, €150-250, more accessible. Other references: Astrid y Gastón (Gaston Acurio, historical ambassador, €150-250), Mayta (Jaime Pesaque, €100-180), Mérito. For ceviche: La Mar (Gaston Acurio, lunch only, €40-60), Pescados Capitales, El Mercado. For chifa (Chinese-Peruvian): Madam Tusan. For street anticuchos: Grimanesa Vargas (iconic).
Is Lima dangerous?+
Lima requires real vigilance but remains safe in tourist zones. Stay in Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro — chic residential neighborhoods, well-policed, where to walk day and night without worry. The historic centre (Plaza de Armas, cathedral, San Francisco monastery) is safe in daytime but requires caution after 8pm. Absolutely avoid: Gamarra, La Victoria (except Tacna station access), some Callao neighborhoods (except airport route), San Juan de Lurigancho, Comas. Airport taxis: use only official indoor counter companies (Green Cab, Taxi 365) or Uber/Cabify/InDriver. NEVER go out with premium smartphones or visible jewellery, only withdraw money in daytime in shopping centres. Pickpocketing remains frequent on urban buses and in markets. Express kidnapping risk (lightning-fast kidnapping for forced ATM withdrawal) reported — use ATMs in daytime in busy locations. No forbidden zone, but respect the codes.
What to do in Lima beyond gastronomy?+
Lima offers a rich cultural scene beyond gastronomy. UNESCO 1991 historic centre: Plaza Mayor (Plaza de Armas, 1535 cathedral with Pizarro tomb, presidential palace, archiepiscopal palace), San Francisco monastery (1546, catacombs with 70,000 bones, ancient library 25,000 volumes, famous for its Sevillian azulejo-adorned cloister, entry PEN 15), Torre Tagle palace (1735, baroque), Casa de Aliaga (1535, oldest inhabited house in the Americas, guided tour on reservation €25), Convento de Santo Domingo (tomb of Santa Rosa de Lima, first American saint). Larco Museum (absolute must-see, pre-Columbian collection 45,000 pieces, in colonial mansion, gardens, café-restaurant, PEN 30, 3h). Huaca Pucllana (pre-Inca pyramid in Miraflores heart, PEN 15, 45 min guided visit, gourmet restaurant at foot). Barranco quarter: Puente de los Suspiros, MATE (Mario Testino museum, PEN 25), Bajada de Baños, galleries. Parque del Amor and Larcomar in Miraflores (cliffside, sunset). Circuito Mágico del Agua (illuminated fountain park in evening, PEN 8-10).
How to get around Lima?+
Lima is saturated and traffic dense. Prefer Uber, Cabify or InDriver — reliable, affordable (PEN 10-25 per typical Miraflores-Centre ride, PEN 5-15 intra-Miraflores-Barranco), much cheaper than official taxis (often 20-50% more expensive). The Miraflores quarter is compact and done on foot. The Metropolitano (rapid bus on dedicated lane, single north-south line) links Miraflores-Barranco to the historic centre (PEN 3, 30 min, clean and reliable) — practical to go to the centre. Linea 1 metro does not serve tourist neighborhoods. Avoid unofficial taxis near the airport (real risk of scam or assault). From Jorge Chávez airport to Miraflores: official Green Cab/Taxi 365 taxi PEN 60-90 (€15-22, 40-60 min depending on traffic, up to 90 min at peak time), Uber/Cabify PEN 35-55 (€9-14, order at upper-level departure parking), Airport Express bus to Miraflores PEN 25 (1h-1h15).

Our verdict

Lima is Peru's essential gateway and the world culinary capital — minimum 2 night stay is essential to enjoy the exceptional culinary scene (Central, Maido, Kjolle, Astrid y Gastón) and discover Miraflores, Barranco and the UNESCO historic centre. Our recommendation: book your world top restaurant 2-6 months ahead (Central and Maido often full 4-6 months), sleep at Miraflores or Barranco (safe and lively neighborhoods, international or boutique hotels), visit Larco Museum in a half day (absolute must-see to understand pre-Columbian archaeology before Cusco). Travel to Lima from December to April for sun (but wet Andes), or accept garúa fog in June-August corresponding to combined Cusco-Machu Picchu high season. Stay in Miraflores/Barranco/San Isidro neighborhoods for safety, use Uber/Cabify for travel.
