Lima
The world culinary capital with Central #1 in 2023, Maido in nikkei cuisine and Kjolle in top 30, the cliffside Miraflores and Barranco quarters above the Pacific, and the UNESCO 1991 baroque historic centre.
Lima (Peru's capital, 10 million inhabitants, founded by Francisco Pizarro on 18 January 1535 under the name Ciudad de los Reyes) is the modern metropolis and world culinary capital since 2010. Three restaurants in the World's 50 Best top 10 — Central (Virgilio Martínez, world #1 in 2023, Mater menu by altitudes), Maido (Mitsuharu Tsumura, Peruvian-Japanese nikkei cuisine), Kjolle (Pía León) — an exceptional terroir (84 micro-climates out of 117 worldwide), a creative cuisine unique in the world. It's the gastronomic must-see of any Peruvian trip.
The city extends over 2,800 km² between the Pacific and the first Andean foothills. The climate is particular — Lima sits in a coastal desert (the Peruvian Atacama, one of the world's driest, 3 mm rain/year) but subjected to the garúa fog (June to November) maintaining a permanent grey sky and 85-95% humidity in austral winter, paradoxically without rain. Austral summer (December to April) finally brings sun and warm temperatures (22-28 °C).
Tourist neighborhoods concentrate on the Pacific coast south of the centre. Miraflores (the modern, safe quarter) is the tourist heart — international hotels, restaurants, lively evening Kennedy Park, the Larcomar shopping centre built on the cliff above the Pacific (100 m drop), ruins of Huaca Pucllana (pre-Inca pyramid in the city heart). Barranco (just south) is the bohemian and artistic quarter — street art, gourmet restaurants (Central, Kjolle here), Bridge of Sighs (Puente de los Suspiros, romantic in evening), MATE (Mario Testino museum), art galleries. San Isidro (chic residential) groups business and upscale hospitality.
What we love
- ✅World culinary capital: 3 restaurants in world top 10 (Central, Maido, Kjolle), world-class ceviche and pisco sour
- ✅Safe and pleasant tourist neighborhoods (Miraflores, Barranco, San Isidro) with cliffside ocean front
- ✅UNESCO 1991 historic centre: Plaza Mayor, 1535 cathedral, San Francisco monastery with catacombs
- ✅Larco Museum: pre-Columbian collection among the world's finest, 45,000 pieces
- ✅International gateway (LIM Jorge Chávez modernized 2025), direct Paris-Lima flight 12h Air France
What to know
- ❌Garúa fog from June to November: grey sky, rare sun, humid-cool feel
- ❌Safety vigilance outside tourist neighborhoods (Gamarra, La Victoria, Callao to avoid)
- ❌Chaotic and polluted traffic (10 million inhabitants), long trips between neighborhoods
- ❌Lima beaches impractical outside austral summer (cold Humboldt water 15-19 °C, fog)
- ❌World top restaurants to book 2-6 months ahead

Our verdict
Lima is Peru's essential gateway and the world culinary capital — minimum 2 night stay is essential to enjoy the exceptional culinary scene (Central, Maido, Kjolle, Astrid y Gastón) and discover Miraflores, Barranco and the UNESCO historic centre. Our recommendation: book your world top restaurant 2-6 months ahead (Central and Maido often full 4-6 months), sleep at Miraflores or Barranco (safe and lively neighborhoods, international or boutique hotels), visit Larco Museum in a half day (absolute must-see to understand pre-Columbian archaeology before Cusco). Travel to Lima from December to April for sun (but wet Andes), or accept garúa fog in June-August corresponding to combined Cusco-Machu Picchu high season. Stay in Miraflores/Barranco/San Isidro neighborhoods for safety, use Uber/Cabify for travel.
