Queenstown
Queenstown is the undisputed world capital of extreme sports since the invention of modern bungee jumping in 1988 — Kawarau Bridge bungee (43 m, historic), Nevis Bungy (134 m, country's highest), 18,000 ft skydive, Shotover jet boat, ski at Coronet Peak and The Remarkables in winter — all on the spectacular shores of Lake Wakatipu, dominated by The Remarkables.
Queenstown (Tāhuna in Māori) is a small town of just 15,000 permanent inhabitants (up to 28,000 with seasonal workers at peak) — but it's the undisputed world capital of extreme sports and outdoor adventure. Magnificently located on the northern shore of Lake Wakatipu (Z-shaped glacial lake, 80 km long), dominated by the Remarkables (iconic mountain range peaking at 2,343 m), surrounded by the Southern Alps — Queenstown is one of the most beautiful towns in the world in terms of natural setting.
Queenstown's recent history pivots in November 1988: AJ Hackett and Henry van Asch open the world's first commercial bungee jumping site on the Kawarau Bridge (43 m above the river). 30 years later, the adrenaline industry generates over NZD 300 million per year.
Thrill activities revolve around several major operators. The Kawarau Bridge Bungy by AJ Hackett (the historic bungee, 43 m, NZD 235) is the emblematic experience. For real adrenaline lovers, the Nevis Bungy (134 m, NZD 320, 45 min by shuttle from Queenstown) is New Zealand's highest bungee — jump from a pod suspended over the Nevis canyon, 8.5 seconds of freefall.
The Queenstown skydive with NZONE Skydive offers the world's most spectacular jumps — choice between 9,000 ft (NZD 299), 12,000 ft (NZD 379) and 15,000 ft (NZD 539, 60 sec freefall) — one of the highest commercial jumps in the world.
The Shotover Jet (NZD 169, 25 min thrills) is the other signature activity — high-speed jet boat (up to 85 km/h) in the narrow Shotover Canyon, tight 360° turns.
Beyond adrenaline, Queenstown offers: Skyline Gondola (NZD 52 return) to Bob's Peak (446 m) for panoramic view. TSS Earnslaw (1912 steamer, 2 h cruise to Walter Peak with barbecue, NZD 90-150). Queenstown is also the ideal base for Milford Sound — day excursion 12 h, NZD 200-300 with transport and cruise. The Routeburn Track (3-day Great Walk) starts at Glenorchy (45 min from Queenstown). The Central Otago region produces the world's most southerly Pinot Noir — recognised houses include Felton Road, Mt Difficulty, Akarua, Rippon. Arrowtown (25 min from Queenstown) is a historic gold rush village from 1862, particularly spectacular in autumn.
Winter (June-September) transforms Queenstown into the southern hemisphere's ski capital. Four stations accessible: Coronet Peak (25 min), The Remarkables (35 min), Cardrona (1 h via Crown Range), Treble Cone (1h15, expert).

Our verdict
Queenstown is the signature stop on New Zealand's South Island — undisputed world capital of extreme sports (bungee invented in 1988, 15,000 ft skydive, Shotover jet boat), ideal base for the Milford Sound excursion and Routeburn Track, recognised Central Otago Pinot Noir vineyards, excellent winter skiing (4 stations), all within one of the world's most beautiful natural settings (Lake Wakatipu, Remarkables). It's a minimum 3-4 day stop in any South Island itinerary.
