Bourail
Bourail (160 km north-west of Nouméa, 2 h 30 drive) is the cultural capital of the Caledonian broussards (European livestock farmers from the west coast). Roche Percée, Turtle Bay and Poé beach rank among the most beautiful coastal landscapes of New Caledonia. The Sheraton Deva Resort (5*) is one of the best hotels in the territory.
Bourail is a town of 5,500 inhabitants located on the west coast of Grande Terre, 160 km north-west of Nouméa (2 h 30 drive on the RT1). It is the cultural capital of the Caledonian broussards — descendants of European settlers (often former transported convicts) established since the 19th century for extensive cattle and horse ranching. Bourail retains a strong 'Caledonian Far West' identity with its ranches, cowboys, annual rodeo (Bourail Fair in August), and particular relationship with the land.
Beyond this cultural identity, Bourail is above all famous for the beauty of its coastal landscapes — undoubtedly the most spectacular of Grande Terre:
Roche Percée (8 km from Bourail) is the iconic rock formation of the west coast: a monumental rock pierced by a natural arch, sculpted by marine erosion, rising at the end of a white sand beach. One of the emblematic images of New Caledonia.
Turtle Bay (near Roche Percée) is one of the most important green turtle nesting sites in New Caledonia. From November to January, green turtles (Chelonia mydas) come to lay their eggs in the bay's sand. The Bwärä Tortues Marines association organises supervised night observation outings (€15-25/person, by reservation).
Poé beach (12 km from Bourail) is one of the most beautiful beaches in New Caledonia: 15 km of white sand stretching along a translucent turquoise lagoon. This is where the Sheraton Deva Resort & Spa (5*) is located, established on the Deva peninsula. Poé beach is also the starting point for the Ténia islet (kayak or boat, 15 min crossing) — deserted islet ringed by virgin reefs, exceptional snorkelling.
The Sheraton Deva Resort & Spa (5*, Deva peninsula) is one of the best hotels in New Caledonia — vast high-end resort established in a 6,000-hectare protected estate, with direct access to Poé beach, 18-hole golf course, spa, several restaurants. Rates: €250-450/night standard room, €400-700/night suite.
Other sites: Bourail museum (history of convicts and broussards), broussard farm (traditional ranch visit), Five Villages trail (cultural hike through Kanak tribes), Wadiana (waterfall to the south-east), New Zealand cemetery (memorial to NZ soldiers who died in New Caledonia during WWII).
What we love

- ✅Sheraton Deva Resort (5*): one of the best hotels in the territory, 18-hole golf, spa

What to know
- ❌Long journey from Nouméa (2 h 30 drive, 160 km)
- ❌West coast beaches sometimes windy (sustained trade winds)
- ❌Limited nightlife outside Sheraton Deva
- ❌Ténia islet access by kayak/boat, weather-dependent

Our verdict
Bourail is the unavoidable west coast stop on a Grande Terre discovery trip, and one of the most beautiful coastal landscapes of the Caledonian territory. Plan 1 to 2 nights on site in a 14-day New Caledonia itinerary: Day 1 (drive from Nouméa 2 h 30, installation, Roche Percée at sunset), Day 2 (morning Poé beach + Ténia islet by kayak/boat, afternoon Bourail museum or broussard farm visit), Day 3 (morning Turtle Bay — green turtle observation in season, November-January ideal — then return to Nouméa). Stay preferably at Sheraton Deva Resort & Spa (5*, €250-450/night, direct access to Poé beach) or at La Néra Hôtel (3*, Bourail centre, €130-180/night). Prioritise September-November for optimal conditions. For turtle nesting, target November-January (absolute peak).
