Milford Sound
Milford Sound is New Zealand's most iconic fjord and one of the world's most spectacular natural landscapes — a 16 km vertical fjord dominated by Mitre Peak (1,692 m), waterfalls plunging directly into the sea (Stirling Falls 151 m, Bowen Falls 162 m), UNESCO World Heritage within Fiordland National Park.
Milford Sound (Piopiotahi in Māori) is one of the most spectacular natural sites in the world — Rudyard Kipling described it as the '8th Wonder of the World' in 1891. Located in the Fiordland National Park (12,519 km², 5th largest national park in the world, UNESCO World Heritage since 1990), it is technically a fjord: a glacial valley carved by Pleistocene glaciers, invaded by the sea after melting.
The dimensions are dizzying: 16 km long, up to 300 m of water depth, rock walls rising 1,200-1,700 m from sea level, perfectly vertical. The emblematic summit is Mitre Peak (1,692 m) — triangular peak resembling an episcopal mitre, nicknamed 'the world's most photographed mountain'.
Milford Sound's climate is one of the rainiest on the planet — 7,000 to 9,000 mm of precipitation per year on average (vs 600 mm/year in Paris), with an absolute record of 18,000 mm in 1976. It rains about 200 days a year. Paradoxically, bad weather is one of the best conditions for visiting Milford Sound — the rains create the spectacle of hundreds of ephemeral waterfalls cascading down the walls.
The signature experience is the 2 h boat cruise on the fjord (NZD 80-130/person with Real Journeys, Mitre Peak Cruises, Southern Discoveries, JUCY Cruise). Boats depart from the Milford Sound Visitor Centre and sail to the Tasman Sea with photo stops at the main waterfalls, observation of New Zealand fur seals (permanent colony at Seal Rock), Hector dolphins (endemic NZ species, world's smallest dolphins — possible at 30% of trips), Fiordland crested penguins (vulnerable species, observable October to February).

The access to Milford Sound is a journey in itself — the Milford Road (State Highway 94) from Te Anau (120 km, 2-3 h) is one of the most beautiful roads in the world. Multiple recommended photo stops: Mirror Lakes, Eglinton Valley, The Divide, Lake Marian trail (3 h round trip), Falls Creek, Homer Tunnel (1,270 m, hand-built between 1935 and 1953), Chasm Walk (20 min trail).
