The North Island enjoys a milder and more temperate climate than the South Island, with more stable temperatures year-round. It's a four-season destination, each period with its strengths.
The austral summer (December to March) is the main season: 22-28 °C temperatures, warm sea (20-23 °C) for swimming at Bay of Islands and Coromandel, long days (15-16 h of light in December-January), all sites accessible. It's also peak tourist season with its constraints (Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Hobbiton saturated, 4-6 months advance booking, peak prices). It's also the season for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing accessible in standard equipment. Crowd peak in January-February.
Autumn (March-April) and spring (October-November) offer the best compromises: still pleasant weather (15-22 °C), 20-30% lower rates, smaller crowds. Autumn is our preferred period — blazing colours on imported trees (poplars, beeches) at Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa, harvests, golden light. Spring brings blossom, newborn lambs and full waterfalls.
The austral winter (June to September) is low season for the North Island — cold and rainy weather (8-15 °C by day), Bay of Islands much less attractive (cold sea, rain), Tongariro Crossing often impassable (snow, alpine conditions). But it's the ski season at Mt Ruapehu (Whakapapa, Tūroa — July to October), the only North Island ski destination. It's also an interesting season for Rotorua: geyser vapours are much more visible in the cold, creating uniquely photogenic landscapes. Hotel rates at their lowest (-30 to -40% vs summer).
