The North Island offers an exceptional diversity of activities justifying a minimum of 7-12 days on site.
In Auckland, climb the Skytower (328 m) for panoramic views of the city and Hauraki Gulf (Sky Jump 192 m possible for the bold, NZD 285). Board a ferry from Britomart to Devonport (12 min, Victorian village atmosphere) or Rangitoto Island (dormant volcano, 2 h summit hike). A day on Waiheke Island (40 min ferry) is essential: tastings at boutique vineyards (Stonyridge, Mudbrick, Cable Bay), quiet beaches, restaurants. The Auckland Museum (excellent Māori collection and natural history) and Maritime Museum complete the cultural dimension. To the west, the wild beaches of Piha, Karekare and Muriwai (gannet colony) offer spectacular nature 45 min from Auckland.
In Rotorua, dive into the unique geothermal activity: visit Te Puia (Pohutu geyser erupting 30 m, half-day combined with Māori culture, wood-carving school, evening hāngi option NZD 100-150) or Wai-O-Tapu (the 'Thermal Wonderland', spectacular Champagne Pool, half-day NZD 38). Experience a Māori cultural evening with traditional hāngi at Mitai Maori Village or Tamaki Maori Village — powhiri welcome, haka demonstrations, underground steam-cooked meal, NZD 100-150/person. Bathe in a hot spring: Polynesian Spa (in town, NZD 40-80 depending on zone), Hell's Gate (with mud bath), Waikite Valley (natural setting). On day excursions from Rotorua: Hobbiton at Matamata (1 h drive, NZD 130), Waitomo Caves (glow worms, 2 h drive), Mount Tarawera (the volcano whose 1886 eruption destroyed the Pink and White Terraces).
Tongariro National Park offers the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (19.4 km, one of the world's best single-day treks), shorter hikes (Tama Lakes, Taranaki Falls), and skiing at Whakapapa or Tūroa in winter (July-October).
In Wellington, the Te Papa Museum (Te Papa Tongarewa, 'our place') is one of the world's best national museums and free — 6 levels with an entire wing dedicated to Māori history (giant waka canoe, sculpted marae, sacred taonga), natural history galleries, contemporary art. Plan a minimum of 3-4 h. Wander down Cuba Street (independent cafes, galleries, nightlife), take the funicular (Cable Car, NZD 7) up to Mt Victoria or the Botanic Gardens for the panoramic view. Film fans will visit Weta Workshop (Lord of the Rings, Hobbit, Avatar effects — Miramar, 30 min from centre, guided tours NZD 60).
In the Bay of Islands (Northland, 3h30 from Auckland), board a Hole in the Rock and dolphin cruise (4 h, NZD 100-130), visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds (1840 founding document, marae, ceremonial waka, NZD 60), explore the historic village of Russell (the country's first capital, 10-min ferry from Paihia) and push on to Cape Reinga (Māori spiritual tip, 3 h from Paihia, spectacular dunes of the 90 Mile Beach).
The Coromandel Peninsula (1h30 from Auckland) offers emblematic golden beaches: Cathedral Cove (iconic rocky cathedral, 1h30 round-trip trail), Hot Water Beach (dig your own hot bath in the sand at low tide), charming villages of Coromandel Town and Whitianga.
