The North Island is perfectly suited to road tripping — distances are reasonable and roads in good condition (apart from a few enclaved sections like East Cape).
The rental car (€50-90/day, Hertz, Avis, Apex, Jucy) is the most flexible option for 2 people in hotels/motels. Key distances: Auckland-Rotorua 3 h (235 km), Rotorua-Tongariro 2h30, Tongariro-Wellington 4 h, Auckland-Bay of Islands 3h30 (250 km), Auckland-Hobbiton 2h30, Auckland-Wellington 8 h direct (avoid without stops).
The campervan (motorhome) (€150-250/day in high season, Maui, Britz, Apollo, Jucy) is ideal for 14-21 days of outdoor adventure with access to DOC campsites (Department of Conservation, NZD 8-15/night in nature) or holiday parks (TOP10, Kiwi Holiday Parks, NZD 30-60/night with bathrooms/kitchen).
The long-distance bus InterCity covers all major cities with passes from NZD 200 for 15 trips — ideal budget option for backpackers.
Domestic flights with Air New Zealand or Jetstar are useful if pressed for time. Auckland-Wellington (1 h, €60-150 one-way), Auckland-Queenstown (2 h, €80-200 one-way), Auckland-Christchurch (1h30, €60-150). Book 2-3 months ahead for best fares.
The Interislander ferry (and competitor Bluebridge) between Wellington and Picton (South Island) is itself one of the world's most beautiful sea crossings — 3h30 through Cook Strait and the Marlborough Sounds. Prices: €70-100/person foot passenger, €200-400 with car/campervan. Book 3-6 months ahead in high season for vehicles.
Watch for the left-hand driving (British heritage): an adaptation period is needed for European drivers. International driving permit or French permit translated mandatory.
