Itineraries — North Island

The North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui) is the populated, cultural and geothermal half of New Zealand. It concentrates 3.9 of the country's 5.2 million inhabitants, its two largest cities (Auckland 1.7 million, Wellington 215,000), the heart of living Māori culture and a globally unique geothermal heritage — Rotorua geysers, active volcanoes of Tongariro National Park (UNESCO), natural hot springs. For a first trip to New Zealand, the North Island is the essential cultural and urban stop, complementary to the wilder, more alpine South Island.

The classic 6-7 day itinerary combines: 2 days Auckland (Skytower, Waiheke vineyards, Devonport, Auckland Museum), 2 days Rotorua (Te Puia geysers + Māori culture, Wai-O-Tapu coloured pools, hāngi evening, Hobbiton excursion at Matamata en route), 1 day Tongariro (Alpine Crossing if conditions allow, or overnight in Tongariro National Park), 2 days Wellington (Te Papa Museum, Cuba Street, Mt Victoria) before the Interislander ferry to Picton (South Island).

Over 10-12 days, add 2-3 days Bay of Islands in the north (Waitangi Treaty Grounds, Russell, dolphin cruise, Cape Reinga) and 2 days Coromandel Peninsula (Cathedral Cove, Hot Water Beach, golden beaches). For 14 North Island-only days, add Taranaki (conical Mount Taranaki, surfing), Hawkes Bay (Chardonnay-Syrah vineyards, art deco Napier) and the East Cape (authentic Māori coast, lightly touristed).
