Aoraki/Mt Cook
Aoraki/Mount Cook is New Zealand's highest summit (3,724 m, 'cloud piercer' in Māori) — at the heart of the Southern Alps, with the iconic Hooker Valley Track, the Tasman Glacier (longest in NZ, 27 km), and the Aoraki/Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve offering one of the world's most beautiful night skies.
Aoraki/Mount Cook is New Zealand's highest summit — 3,724 m in altitude. The Māori name 'Aoraki' means 'cloud piercer'. The official binational name since 1998 — Aoraki/Mount Cook — recognises Māori cultural importance while retaining the European name given by Captain James Cook in 1770.
The Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park (722 km², created in 1953, UNESCO World Heritage 1990) hosts 23 summits over 3,000 m (out of the country's 27 — most concentrated here), 19 major glaciers including the Tasman Glacier (27 km, the longest in New Zealand) and the Hooker Glacier, glacial lakes with milky turquoise waters (Lake Pukaki, Lake Tekapo) and unique alpine biodiversity (kea — the world's only alpine parrot).
The Aoraki/Mt Cook village (alt. 762 m, just 20 permanent inhabitants) is the only access point. Several emblematic accommodations: The Hermitage Hotel (since 1884, NZ's most recognised historic hotel, direct view of Aoraki — NZD 250-450 standard rooms, NZD 400-700 panoramic view rooms), Aoraki Mt Cook Lodge & Motels, YHA Mt Cook, White Horse Hill Campground (DOC, NZD 15/night).
The Hooker Valley Track is the iconic and accessible hike — 10 km round trip, 3 h, almost flat easy trail, along the Hooker glacier river, crossing 3 spectacular suspension bridges, to the Hooker Lake and the foot of the Hooker Glacier with direct view of Aoraki/Mt Cook. Our absolute recommendation — one of the world's most beautiful easy hikes.
The Tasman Glacier boat excursion (NZD 175/person, 2h30, Glacier Explorers operator — September to May only) is unique: navigation among floating icebergs on the Tasman Glacier Lake (terminal glacier lake created only since 1973 and growing 200 m/year). You can touch the icebergs (5,000-10,000 years old).
The helicopter — heli-hike glacier with Helicopter Line or Mount Cook Ski Planes (NZD 450-650/person, 3 h with 1 h on the ice) or scenic flight Aoraki (NZD 240-450/person for 25-50 min). The ski plane landing on the Tasman Glacier (NZD 425-525/person, 1 h, historic Mount Cook Ski Planes operator since 1953) is the most emblematic experience.
The Aoraki/Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve (4,300 km² with 2022 extension — the largest in the world) was created in 2012. It protects one of the clearest skies in the world. The signature experience: guided astronomical tour — Earth & Sky Stargazing from Mt John observatory at Tekapo (NZD 130-180/person, 2 h), Big Sky Stargazing at Aoraki Mt Cook (NZD 90-130).
The Mackenzie Country region (around Tekapo and Pukaki) leading to Aoraki is a magnificent stop in itself: Lake Tekapo and its Church of the Good Shepherd (1935 — one of the most photographed sites in NZ), Lake Pukaki with extraordinary milky turquoise waters (60 km long).

Our verdict
Aoraki/Mt Cook is the alpine signature stop on New Zealand's South Island — country's highest summit (3,724 m), iconic Hooker Valley Track, Tasman Glacier the longest in NZ, International Dark Sky Reserve for the world's most beautiful night skies. It's an ideal 1-2 night stop between Christchurch (3h30) and Queenstown (3h30). Our ideal programme: day 1 — arrival late afternoon, Hooker Valley Track at sunset, dinner Panorama Restaurant Hermitage, starry sky observation; day 2 — Tasman Glacier boat in the morning (NZD 175, Sept-May), Kea Point or Sealy Tarns hike, departure to next stop. Book Hermitage 2-3 months ahead in high season.
