Loyalty Islands

Itineraries — Loyalty Islands

The Loyalty Islands — Lifou, Maré, Ouvéa and Tiga — are the most authentic archipelago in New Caledonia, and one of the most singular destinations in the French South Pacific. Located 100 km east of Grande Terre, accessible in 35-50 min by flight from Nouméa-Magenta, the archipelago concentrates the most living Kanak culture in the territory — 95% of the population is Kanak, tribal organisation structures social life, and vernacular languages (drehu on Lifou, nengone on Maré, iaai and faga uvea on Ouvéa) are spoken daily.

For a trip to the Loyalty Islands, the golden rule is to choose one island rather than flitting between them: 3-4 nights on an island allow a real discovery (landscapes, tribes, encounters), while a multi-island stay split into 2 nights per island produces a superficial experience. Lifou is the best first choice (the most accessible, the most balanced), Maré for travellers seeking the purest immersion, Ouvéa for the iconic beach and historical dimension.

Tribal lodge accommodation (traditional case fitted out, half-board at €50-100/night) is the signature experience of the Loyalty Islands. Do not forget the customary gesture to present to the tribal chief on arrival.
