Les Trois-Îlets

Martinique's historic seaside resort: hotel-clubs, marina, casino and 20-minute maritime shuttle to Fort-de-France — the most structured seaside pole of the island.

4.60Sud Martinique

Les Trois-Îlets are one of the most emblematic seaside communes of Martinique — the historic resort of the island, developed from the 1970s around Pointe du Bout to welcome the first major flows of international tourism. The commune owes its name to three islets (Boucher, Sixtain, Charles) that close the Fort-de-France bay to the southwest, and unfolds on a rocky point covered with coconut groves, villas, hotel-clubs and an active marina.

The Pointe du Bout is the heart of the seaside resort: marina (Le Marina), casino (the only one of the island), shops, beachfront restaurants, hotel-clubs (Bambou, Sofitel — now under other brands after renovation). It is also the embarkation point of the maritime shuttle that connects Pointe du Bout to Fort-de-France in 20 minutes (€4-6 one way, several rotations per hour from 6:30am to 6:30pm).

Two family beaches frame Pointe du Bout. Anse Mitan, main beach of the quarter, offers 800 metres of golden sand, calm sea and complete beach infrastructure (lolos, deck chair and paddle rental, diving school). Anse à l'Âne, 2 km to the west, is calmer, with a preserved authentic village atmosphere.

The cultural dimension of Trois-Îlets is not lacking. The Pagerie Museum, 4 km from the village, is installed in the birthplace of Joséphine de Beauharnais (1763-1814), first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress of the French. The Savane des Esclaves (4 km from the village), reconstructed Creole village, retraces with remarkable pedagogy the history of slavery in Martinique. The artisan village offers basketry, pottery, madras works, local jewellery.

The village of Trois-Îlets (3 km from Pointe du Bout) has retained an authentic character: Creole church, market, family tables d'hôtes.

What we love

  • Most structured seaside resort of Martinique: hotel-clubs, marina, casino, restaurants
  • Family beaches of Anse Mitan and Anse à l'Âne: calm sea, supervision, complete infrastructure
  • Maritime shuttle to Fort-de-France in 20 min: picturesque and practical option without a car
  • Pagerie Museum and Savane des Esclaves: cultural and memorial richness
  • Diversified nautical activities: sailing, diving, jet-ski, paddle, kayak, catamaran outing

What to know

  • More tourist atmosphere than authentic villages (Sainte-Anne, Anses d'Arlet)
  • High rates in high season (€200-450/night hotels in carême)
  • No exceptional beach in the sense of Les Salines (golden sand, modest lagoon)
  • Marina sometimes noisy in the evening (very lively bar terraces)
  • Limited authentic village life — prefer Trois-Îlets village for immersion

Frequently asked questions

How does the maritime shuttle to Fort-de-France work?+
The maritime shuttle Pointe du Bout — Fort-de-France is one of the most practical of the island. Departure from Pointe du Bout pier (5 min walk from the marina), arrival at La Savane pier in Fort-de-France. Trip: 20 minutes, fare €4-6 one way, several rotations per hour from 6:30am to 6:30pm (weekend and holidays reduced schedules). Companies: Vedettes Tropicales, West-Indies. Practical for visiting Fort-de-France on day trip without a car, and offers a pretty view of the bay and Fort Saint-Louis during the crossing.
What is the difference between Pointe du Bout and Trois-Îlets village?+
Pointe du Bout: rocky point at the western end of the commune, structured seaside resort with hotel-clubs, marina, casino, restaurants, Anse Mitan and Anse à l'Âne beaches, shuttle pier. International tourist atmosphere. Trois-Îlets village: administrative centre of the commune 3 km northeast of Pointe du Bout. Preserved authentic Creole atmosphere: church, town hall, market, family tables d'hôtes, small independent rentals. Ideal for authentic immersion away from tourist frenzy.
Where to stay in Trois-Îlets?+
Three distinct zones. Pointe du Bout: hotel-clubs (Hôtel Bambou, La Suite Villa, Le Carayou: €150-350/night), residences with services (Karibea Amyris: €100-200/night), all-inclusive formulas possible. Anse à l'Âne: independent rentals and small family hotels (€90-180/night), calmer atmosphere. Trois-Îlets village: home rentals and tables d'hôtes (€60-130/night), maximum authenticity. Book 3 to 6 months in advance in high season.
What to do in Trois-Îlets with children?+
The resort is very well suited to families. Anse Mitan beach: calm sea, supervision in high season, paddle and kayak rental. Anse à l'Âne beach: even calmer, ideal for young children. Catamaran outing to François white seabeds (with lunch and open bar, free for children under 4). Pagerie Museum and Savane des Esclaves for historical and cultural dimension. Martinique Aquarium (Anse Mitan): fun visit on Antillean marine fauna. Mini-golf and junior sailing school at the marina. Hotel-clubs offer mini-clubs and supervised activities.
Which museum to visit in Trois-Îlets?+
Two unmissable sites. Pagerie Museum (4 km from village, €7 adult): birthplace of Joséphine de Beauharnais (1763-1814), first wife of Napoleon. Presents the Martinican childhood, the typical colonial house and the controversial historical context (re-establishment of slavery by Napoleon in 1802). Savane des Esclaves (4 km from village, €14 adult): reconstruction of a Creole village of slaves, retraces with remarkable pedagogy the history of slavery in Martinique. Essential site to understand the Antillean soul. Plan 1-2h per site. Combined visit recommended.
Can you access the Robert islets or white seabeds from Trois-Îlets?+
Yes, several providers from Pointe du Bout marina offer catamaran or yacht outings to the François white seabeds (€90-130/person, full day with lunch and open bar). Typical programme: departure 9am, 1h30 navigation to white seabeds (vast expanses of white sand emerging at low tide), swimming and aperitif in waist-deep water, on-board Creole lunch, return around 5pm. Family excursion free for children under 4. Book 1-2 days in advance in high season. The Robert islets (further, Atlantic coast) are also accessible but on more expensive private outing.

Our verdict

Les Trois-Îlets are the most structured and accessible seaside resort of Martinique — ideal for a first family stay or for a traveller on short escape wishing to maximise logistics. Pointe du Bout offers everything a comfort-mode traveller seeks: hotel-clubs, marina, restaurants, family beaches, maritime shuttle to Fort-de-France. Plan 3 to 5 days on Trois-Îlets, in combination with Sainte-Anne (30 min) for Les Salines and Fort-de-France (20 min by boat) for the urban dimension. Book 3 to 6 months in advance in high season. For a more authentic experience, prefer Trois-Îlets village or an independent rental at Anse à l'Âne rather than the large Pointe du Bout hotel-clubs.
