Getting around — Maharashtra

Mumbai is known for its chaotic but efficient public transport. The suburban train network (Western Line, Central Line, Harbour Line) is the backbone — 7.5 million passengers per day, one of the world's busiest networks. The Mumbai metro (opened 2014, 3 operational lines 2025) is modern, air-conditioned, clean.

Black and yellow taxis (mandatory meter) are Mumbai's iconic image. Uber and Ola work throughout the city, reliable. Auto-rickshaws (tuk-tuks) only allowed north of Mahim.

Mumbai-Goa: domestic flight 1h (€60-120). Konkan Railway train (Mumbai CSMT-Madgaon Goa, 9-12h in AC berth, 700-1,500 INR). Mumbai-Aurangabad: flight 1h (€60-100), overnight train Devagiri Express 7-8h, road 6-8h by car.

In Aurangabad, for Ellora-Ajanta, private taxi with driver for the day: Ellora 1,200-2,000 INR, Ajanta 3,000-5,000 INR. Favour two separate days rather than chaining everything.
