The Golden Circle is Iceland's most iconic itinerary, and probably the most geologically dense in all of Europe. The classic loop measures about 300 km from Reykjavik and back, and combines in a single day Þingvellir National Park (UNESCO), the Geysir geothermal area and the Gullfoss waterfall — three sites that each, in isolation, would justify the trip.
The most common itinerary leaves Reykjavik east on Route 1 (Ring Road), branches onto Route 36 to Þingvellir (45 minutes from the capital), then follows Route 365 to Laugarvatn and Route 37 to Geysir (1 hour from Þingvellir), before continuing on Route 35 to Gullfoss (10 minutes north-east of Geysir). The return runs via Route 35 to Reykholt, Skálholt and Selfoss before rejoining Reykjavik on Route 1. The loop takes 5 to 8 hours with stops, ideally leaving early to outpace the crowds.
Extension options are plentiful: add the Kerið crater (Route 35 between Selfoss and Reykjavik, €5 entry, 30 minutes on site), the Friðheimar tomato farm for a cult lunch, the Secret Lagoon at Flúðir (authentic geothermal lagoon, €30), or the Reykjadalur Hot Springs (hike + soak in a warm river, free). With a night on site (Hotel Geysir, ION Adventure Hotel, Suðurland farms), you can also enjoy Northern Lights in winter, far from the light pollution of the capital.
