The Golden Circle is explored by hire car or organised tour from Reykjavik. No regular public transport serves the loop.
By hire car, the full loop from Reykjavik is around 300 km and 4-5 hours of effective driving. The main roads (36 to Þingvellir, 37 to Geysir, 35 to Gullfoss and Selfoss) are entirely paved, well maintained and well signposted. A 2WD compact is more than sufficient from April to October; in winter, check road conditions on road.is before leaving and consider a 4x4 in case of recent snowfall. Fuel costs €1.80-2.10/litre — a car typically consumes about €30 worth on the whole loop.
By organised tour, options are plentiful from Reykjavik: Reykjavik Excursions, Gray Line, Iceland Excursions, GeoIceland (€80-130/person for the full day, transfer included, 9-10 hours). Premium small-group tours (Hidden Iceland, Iceland Travel, 8-15 people) cost €150-200/person but offer a more personalised experience with optimised photo stops. Hybrid tours (Golden Circle + Silfra snorkelling, or Golden Circle + Secret Lagoon) are a good option to combine activities in one day (€180-280/person).
By bicycle, the Golden Circle is not recommended: roads without cycle lanes, very strong winds in the Þingvallavatn valley, sites too distant for one day. A few hikers do the loop on foot over several days via the trails of Þingvellir, Laugarvatn and Geysir, but this is an option for seasoned adventurers.
For winter travellers or those uncomfortable with Icelandic driving, the organised tour is significantly safer. For others, the personal car remains the most flexible option — you can leave before 8am to outpace the crowds, extend or shorten each stop, and add secondary sites (Kerið, Friðheimar, Secret Lagoon) at your own pace.
