The best periods

The best time to visit Gullfoss is May to October at full power, November to March partially frozen.

Frequently asked questions

How long to spend at Gullfoss?+
30 to 60 minutes are enough to discover the two viewpoints. The __upper viewpoint__ (accessible directly from the car park, no stairs) offers the panoramic view of both tiers and the canyon — this is the iconic photo. The __lower viewpoint__ (200 m descent via stairs) places the visitor at first-drop level for an immersive experience with spray. Count 5 extra min for the Sigríður Tómasdóttir commemorative plaque and the cafeteria-toilets.
Do you need a waterproof for Gullfoss?+
Yes, especially for the lower viewpoint. The waterfall's spray quickly soaks clothing, especially in unfavourable wind. A light waterproof or a disposable poncho (sold on site €5-8) is enough. For photo enthusiasts, bring a __waterproof bag__ or a cloth to regularly wipe the lens. In winter, these sprays can turn the trails into ice rinks — increased vigilance.
Is Gullfoss accessible in winter?+
Yes, the main road (35) is paved and cleared year-round. The upper viewpoint stays open even in deep winter, with a unique spectacle of partially frozen waterfall and snowy canyon. The __lower trail is regularly closed__ for safety reasons (ice on ground) — check road.is before leaving. The cafeteria and toilets stay open. For Northern Lights, the Gullfoss car park is an excellent observation spot (zero light pollution).
What is Sigríður Tómasdóttir's legend?+
In the early 20th century (1907-1929), Gullfoss was nearly destroyed by a hydroelectric dam project from a British investor. __Sigríður Tómasdóttir__, daughter of the farmer owner of the adjacent land (Tómas Tómasson), opposed the project for 20 years: legal battle before Icelandic courts, 120 km walks in birch-bark sandals to Reykjavik to plead her case, threat to throw herself into the waterfall if the dam were built. The project was finally abandoned in 1929 and Gullfoss protected as a natural monument in 1979. Sigríður is today considered Iceland's first environmental activist. A commemorative plaque at the upper viewpoint honours her fight.
Is there a restaurant at Gullfoss?+
Only the __Gullfoss Kaffi visitor centre cafeteria__ (at the main car park). It serves sandwiches, soups, hot drinks and dishes of the day (€15-25/person, average quality, tourist prices). For better value, head instead to __Hotel Geysir Restaurant__ (10 min west, €25-40/person) or __Friðheimar farm__ (30 min south-west, cult tomato lunch in geothermal greenhouses, €30-35/person, booking recommended).
Can you combine Gullfoss with other sites in one day?+
Yes, this is the essence of the Golden Circle. Combine Gullfoss with: __Geysir__ (10 km west, 10 min, geothermal area with Strokkur erupting every 6-10 min), __Þingvellir__ (1 h west, UNESCO national park with Viking parliament and tectonic rift), __Kerið__ (45 min toward Reykjavik, volcanic crater with turquoise lake, €5 entry), __Friðheimar__ (45 min toward Selfoss, cult tomato lunch), __Secret Lagoon at Flúðir__ (30 min, authentic geothermal lagoon, €30). Everything is doable in one day from Reykjavik (5-8 h round trip with stops).

Our verdict

Gullfoss is one of Europe's most impressive waterfalls and an absolute must-do of the Golden Circle. Count 30-60 minutes on site for the two viewpoints (upper for panoramic view, lower for immersive experience with spray). Our tip: arrive before 10am or after 5pm to avoid the tour-bus crowds, bring a waterproof for the lower viewpoint (heavy spray), and don't miss the commemorative plaque dedicated to Sigríður Tómasdóttir at the upper viewpoint. In winter, the partially frozen waterfall offers a radically different and equally spectacular show — just check the lower trail opening on road.is before leaving.
