Nouvelle-Aquitaine is France's largest region by area — an immense territory combining the Atlantic Ocean (720 km of coast), legendary vineyards (Bordeaux area), UNESCO heritage (Bordeaux Port of the Moon, Saint-Émilion), Basque cultural identity, mountain landscapes (Pyrenees). Its diversity is such that no short stay can claim to cover it entirely.
For a weekend (3 days), target Bordeaux + Saint-Émilion + Arcachon Bay. For a week (7 days), combine Bordeaux area (3 days) + Basque Country (3 days) + 1 transition day (Landes or Pyrenees). Over 10-14 days, add the Périgord (Sarlat, Lascaux, foie gras), the Charentais islands (île de Ré, île d'Oléron, La Rochelle) or the Pyrenees (Pic du Midi d'Ossau, national park).
The key to a successful stay: choose 2-3 accommodation bases and explore in star fashion. Bordeaux is the ideal base for the centre and north; Biarritz or Saint-Jean-de-Luz for the south. A car is essential for vineyards and villages — but TGV Paris-Bordeaux (2h04), TGV Paris-Biarritz (4h), TGV Bordeaux-Biarritz (1h50) allow good mobility between urban hubs.
