Étretat

Things to do — Étretat

The three natural arches are the absolute essential of Étretat. The Porte d'Aval (south, the most iconic) with its 70 m needle has been painted from every angle since Monet. The Manneporte (1.5 km south, accessible by the Customs Officers' path) is the widest of the three arches — possible passage underneath on foot at low tide. The Porte d'Amont (north, topped by the Notre-Dame de la Garde chapel) offers the most complete panoramic view of the village and the southern cliffs.

The Customs Officers' path (GR21) is the essential hike. From Étretat village, allow 3-4h round trip to visit the 3 successive arches passing through the top of the cliffs. Exceptional panoramas at every step. 200 m cumulative elevation gain (repeated ascents and descents). Walking shoes mandatory. Warning: do not approach the edge (frequent landslides).

The Notre-Dame de la Garde chapel (at the top of the Amont cliff, accessible in 15 min walk from the beach) offers the iconic view of the Porte d'Aval. Small religious building built in 1854 (rebuilt after the Second World War). Free, open year-round. Mandatory visit at sunset for the exceptional light.

The Étretat Gardens (at the top of the Amont cliff, right next to the chapel) are a spectacular contemporary creation by Alexandre Grivko (2017). 7 themed gardens mixing topiary art (geometric and organic shapes), contemporary sculptures (Sergei Katran, Sam Bekhita) and panoramic view over the Channel. €12, open April to November. Allow 1h30 visit.

The village of Étretat itself deserves the stroll: Notre-Dame church (12th-13th centuries), fish market hall (1926, fish market on fishing days), Belle Époque villas (Villa Roxelane, Hôtel des Falaises). The Clos Lupin House (museum-house of Maurice Leblanc, creator of Arsène Lupin) is highly original: Leblanc lived in Étretat and set several adventures of his famous burglar there.

At low tide, access the foot of the cliffs and pass under the Porte d'Aval arch — remarkable geological spectacle. Tide calendar essential (each day around 12 noon and midnight for 2-3h). Beware not to get trapped by the rising tide (speed 3-4 km/h).

Nearby, the Alabaster Coast unfolds other sites: Yport (preserved fishing village, 10 km), Fécamp (15 km, Bénédictine Palace extraordinary architecture + liqueur tasting, fishing port), Saint-Valery-en-Caux (35 km), Veules-les-Roses (45 km, Most Beautiful Village, shortest river in France 1.2 km), Dieppe (55 km, large maritime city).
