Frequently asked questions

Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh?+
Both are excellent Red Sea beach destinations, but with nuances. __Sharm el-Sheikh__ (Sinai) offers the finest reefs (Ras Mohammed, Tiran), slightly warmer and more stable climate, more exclusive and premium atmosphere. __Hurghada__ (Egyptian mainland coast) is more affordable, more family-oriented, offers El Gouna as a luxury option, and allows easy combination with Luxor (4-5h drive) — ideal for a culture + beach trip over two weeks. For advanced divers: Sharm. For families with children and first Red Sea trips: Hurghada. For luxury: El Gouna.
How many days for Hurghada?+
For a pure beach week: 7 nights, classic format. To combine with a day excursion to Luxor (4-5h each way, long but feasible): 8-10 nights. To combine with a stay at Luxor (3-4 nights) then transfer to Hurghada for 4-5 nights of beach: 8-10 nights — our preferred format. The Cairo-Luxor-Hurghada road trip in 12-15 days is also excellent for a complete Egyptian trip.
Which Hurghada area to choose?+
The offer is wide. __Sakkala and Mamsha__ (city centre): walkable restaurants and nightlife, often narrow hotel beaches. __Sahl Hasheesh__ (10 km south): integrated 5-star resort area, 8 km promenade, magnificent beaches. __Makadi Bay__ (25 km south): family all-inclusive enclave, huge beaches, quiet. __El Gouna__ (25 km north): luxury and integrated urbanism, artificial lagoons, golf, the most upscale option. For families: Makadi Bay. For couples: El Gouna or Sahl Hasheesh. For nightlife and value for money: central Hurghada.
Is El Gouna worth the extra cost?+
Yes, if your budget allows. Built in 1989 on a lake-city model with canals and artificial lagoons, El Gouna is the most upscale enclave on the entire Egyptian Red Sea. It counts 17 hotels (Mövenpick, Steigenberger, Sheraton Miramar designed by Michael Graves, Three Corners), 4 marinas, a golf course, a private hospital, and even a small private airport. International atmosphere, careful urbanism, maximum security. Count 30-50% more than an equivalent hotel in central Hurghada. Rates: €90-200/person/night in 4-5 star all-inclusive.
How do I get to Hurghada?+
__Hurghada International Airport (HRG)__ welcomes direct flights from dozens of European and Russian cities: London Gatwick (5h, TUI, EasyJet, Jet2), Manchester, Paris (4h30, Transavia, Egyptair, Air Cairo), Brussels, Geneva, Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Moscow. Count €200-400 return depending on season. Airport-hotel transfers are usually included in all-inclusive packages. Otherwise, taxi at €15-30 depending on area. For El Gouna, count €30-45 by taxi from the airport (25 km north). Daily bus connections to Cairo (6h) and Luxor (4-5h).
How does diving work at Hurghada?+
Excellent offer, slightly cheaper than Sharm. The __Giftun Islands__ (Big Giftun, Small Giftun) are the classic site: 30-45 min by boat from Hurghada, white sand beaches, turquoise waters, snorkeling reefs accessible from the boat. Count €30-50 for the all-inclusive snorkeling day, €70-110 for a 2-dive day. The __Sha'ab El Erg__ (north) is famous for its wild dolphins (protocol required). The wrecks of __Abu Galawa__ and __Abu Nuhas__ are must-dos for advanced divers. Live-aboard cruises to the __Brothers Islands__, __Daedalus Reef__ and the south (Marsa Alam) run 7 nights and are among the world's finest.
Is Hurghada safe?+
Yes, Hurghada is a safe and well-secured destination. The tourist zones (Sakkala, Mamsha, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, Makadi Bay) enjoy discreet but constant police presence. The main annoyances are commercial pressure in the markets and some beaches (street vendors, touts) — often more insistent than at Sharm el-Sheikh. Tourist escorts still accompany some Luxor excursions (convoy recommended for security on the desert road). For solo women: stick to main tourist zones and international hotels.

Our verdict

Hurghada is the great family-friendly, affordable destination of the Egyptian Red Sea. Less exclusive than Sharm el-Sheikh, it nonetheless offers excellent diving (Giftun Islands, Sha'ab El Erg), unbeatable value for money in all-inclusive format, and the unique possibility of easily combining beach and culture thanks to its proximity to Luxor (4-5h drive). For travellers seeking luxury and quiet, the El Gouna enclave 25 km north is one of the Middle East's finest beach urbanism achievements. Come ideally between October and May to avoid the extreme summer heat.
