The Nile Valley between Luxor and Aswan is the historical and tourist heart of pharaonic Egypt. It is here, in this narrow green strip irrigated by the river, that the New Kingdom pharaohs (1550-1077 BC) concentrated their greatest constructions — colossal temples, decorated royal tombs, Ptolemaic sanctuaries. The archaeological density is unmatched anywhere in the world: Karnak, Luxor, Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Ramesseum, Hatshepsut and Medinet Habu temples in Luxor; Ptolemaic temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo going up the Nile; Philae, Elephantine Island, Kalabsha and Abu Simbel around Aswan.
The emblematic experience of the region remains the Nile cruise, sailing down from Aswan to Luxor or up from Luxor to Aswan in 3 to 7 nights depending on the formula. The 4-5 star boats (30-80 cabins, international cuisine, swimming pool, evening entertainment) constitute the most accessible option — count €100-200/day/person in full board with English-speaking guide and included excursions. The high-end alternative is the dahabiya: traditional sailing boat of 8-12 cabins, propelled by sail and towing, silent, refined, accessible to sites avoided by big boats. Count €1,800-3,500/week/person for a dahabiya, generally booked 6-12 months in advance.
For a short stay (5-6 days), opt for a 3-4 night Luxor-Aswan-Luxor cruise framed by 1-2 days of exploration of Luxor (Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens) and 1 day in Aswan. For a complete stay (8-10 days), add one or two additional nights in Luxor to peacefully visit the Ramesseum, Hatshepsut temple at Deir el-Bahari, Medinet Habu and the Colossi of Memnon; and a day for the Abu Simbel excursion from Aswan (by plane or escorted road convoy). Over 12-14 days, ideally combine with Cairo and Giza before the cruise, and a 3-5 day beach stay on the Red Sea afterwards — the classic Egypt itinerary.
Access to the region is via Luxor Airport (LXR) or Aswan Airport (ASW), both served from Cairo in 1h-1h30 by EgyptAir (€50-180). No direct flight France-Luxor or France-Aswan; mandatory transit via Cairo or Istanbul. The Watania Sleeper night train Cairo-Luxor (10h, double berth + meals, €110-130/person) is a romantic and comfortable option for travellers seeking experience.
