Frequently asked questions

How many days should I plan for Aswan?+
Two to three full days. Day 1: Elephantine Island and Kitchener's botanical garden by felucca, spice souk, sunset on the Nile. Day 2: Philae Temple in the morning, Unfinished Obelisk and High Dam in the afternoon, dinner in a Nubian village. Day 3 (optional): day excursion to Abu Simbel (280 km, very early departure by bus, plane or 4WD). Add a day if you board a cruise to Luxor.
How do I get to Aswan from Luxor?+
Three options: (1) direct Luxor-Aswan train in 3-4h (€10-25 in first class, multiple daily departures); (2) domestic flight in 45 min (rarely worthwhile for such a short distance, except for international connection); (3) the mythical Nile cruise over 3 or 4 nights, with stops at Edfu, Kom Ombo and Esna — our absolute recommendation if your budget allows.
Hotel base in Aswan or onboard a cruise?+
Both. If you take the Luxor-Aswan cruise, the boat docks for 2-3 nights at Aswan during which you visit the city and Abu Simbel. To fully enjoy Aswan's atmosphere, ideally plan 1-2 additional nights at a land hotel (Sofitel Old Cataract for the legend, Pyramisa Isis Corniche for comfort, or a Nubian guesthouse on Elephantine Island for authenticity).
Is the Abu Simbel excursion worth the effort?+
Yes, absolutely. One of the three or four great moments of any Egyptian trip. The day excursion from Aswan leaves very early (3-5 am) for 280 km of desert road, or 45 min by domestic flight. Count €60-100 by shared bus, €200-300 by plane. Several optional Lake Nasser cruises (3-4 nights) offer a more immersive approach, arriving by lake at sunset — magical but pricey (from €1,200 per person).
What should I try in Aswan?+
Nubian cuisine is one of the warmest in Egypt: Nubian-style spiced chicken (roasted with karkadé, cumin, ginger spice mix), fava-bean meatballs, goat dishes, and of course karkadé (iced hibiscus infusion, drunk everywhere, hot in winter). In the spice souk, buy dried karkadé, cardamom, henna and woven Nubian baskets. Several floating restaurants on the Nile offer authentic Nubian cuisine at sunset.
Is Elephantine Island worth the detour?+
Yes, without hesitation. Reached by felucca from the Corniche (€1-2 crossing, 5 min), it holds three still-inhabited Nubian villages, where houses are painted in bright colours and residents welcome visitors with tea. There's also the Aswan Museum (regional archaeological collection), the remains of the ancient city of Yebou (Elephantine in Greek) and the ancient nilometer that measured the annual flood. Plan a half-day for a full visit.
Is Aswan a safe destination?+
Yes, Aswan is one of the safest and most peaceful cities in Egypt. Police presence is discreet but well-organised around tourist sites and hotels. Commercial harassment exists at Philae and around the marinas (camel drivers, souvenir sellers) but it is less aggressive than in Cairo or Luxor. Solo women travellers will find a more relaxed experience here than in the rest of the country.

Our verdict

Aswan is the gentle breath of an Egyptian trip. After the cultural intensity of Luxor and the buzz of Cairo, you find here a slower rhythm, a more golden light, a warmer population. The Temple of Philae at dusk, feluccas on the cataract at sunset, the spice souk and Elephantine Island alone deserve a 2-3 day stop. Combined with a day at Abu Simbel and a cruise back to Luxor, Aswan becomes one of the great stages of a journey that marks you forever. Come strictly from October to March: Aswan summer is among the harshest in Egypt.
