The best periods

The best time to visit Giza is October to April. The most recommended months are Mars, Avril, Mai, Juin, Juillet, Août, Septembre, Octobre, Novembre.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I need at Giza?+
A full day if you combine the pyramids plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). Plan 3-4 hours on the plateau (pyramids, Sphinx, optional interior of Khufu or Khafre), then 3-4 hours at the GEM for the main collection and the Tutankhamun gallery. To enjoy without rushing, plan two days: one for the plateau and the evening sound and light show, one for the GEM.
Can I enter the pyramids?+
Yes, but it costs extra. Entry inside Khufu is around €20, Khafre or Menkaure around €6. The experience is physical (narrow ascending corridors, heat) and the burial chamber is empty. Reserved for ancient-architecture enthusiasts: general visitors can skip it without regret.
Is the Grand Egyptian Museum worth it?+
Absolutely. Officially inaugurated in 2024 after two decades of construction, the GEM is the largest archaeological museum in the world (92,000 sq m) and the scenography is at remarkable international level. The Tutankhamun gallery, which gathers for the first time the entire 5,400 objects discovered by Howard Carter in 1922, is by itself a reason to come to Egypt. Plan 4 hours minimum.
How do I get to Giza from Cairo?+
The simplest is to take an Uber from anywhere in Cairo (€5-12, 30-60 minutes depending on traffic and start point). The metro reaches Giza station (Line 2) but then requires a taxi to the plateau. Avoid informal taxis touted in the centre. Many agencies offer guided day excursions Giza + GEM + Saqqara at €40-80 per person, including transport and lunch.
Should I hire a guide for Giza?+
Highly recommended. A qualified English- or French-speaking guide costs €30-50 for a half-day and brings the historical depth without which the site remains a pile of stones. Book via your hotel, a reputable agency (Memphis Tours, Djed Egypt Travel, Voyageurs du Monde) or Get Your Guide / Viator. Beware of fake guides who approach you at the entrance: often great marketers, rarely competent Egyptologists.
How do I avoid scams at Giza?+
A few simple rules: (1) buy tickets only at official counters or online, never from middlemen; (2) firmly refuse camel drivers who offer to accompany you 'for free' (the ride will cost €20-50 on return); (3) follow no one claiming to be an 'official guide' without a badge; (4) negotiate every price in advance, in writing if possible; (5) carry small notes for tips (baksheesh), culturally expected but limited to €1-2 at a time.
Is the sound and light show worth it?+
Opinions are split. The show (multiple languages on rotation, including English and French) lasts about an hour and narrates ancient Egyptian history with the pyramids and Sphinx as natural backdrop. It's kitsch (1980s tech barely modernised) but the experience of sitting facing the pyramids at dusk remains magical. Around €25-30 per person. Worth doing at least once on a longer stay.

Our verdict

Giza is unmissable, and the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum in 2024 has transformed the experience: what used to be a tiring half-day among touts has become a full-day combined visit pairing a major archaeological site with world-class museum design. Our advice: start at the plateau opening (8:00), move to the GEM mid-day to escape the heat, and return for the sound and light show in the evening. Avoid June to August, beware of touts (never follow anyone claiming to be your official guide), and book your GEM tickets online (timed slots). One of the three or four great moments of a traveller's life.
