Santiago East

When to go — Santiago East

The Cuban Oriente is best visited from December to April during the dry season. Temperatures (24-32 °C) are the most bearable of the year — Santiago, on the same latitude as Jamaica, suffers all year from temperatures 5-7 °C above Havana. The dry season is also the best time for Sierra Maestra hikes (dry trails, optimal visibility) and for the El Yunque climb in Baracoa.

December-February are the most pleasant months (24-30 °C) with a permanent festive atmosphere. March hosts the Festival Internacional de la Trova in Santiago — one of Cuba's great musical events, unmissable for enthusiasts. April marks the transition but stays pleasant.

July is exceptional for the Santiago Carnival (third week, 10 days around 26 July) — Cuba's biggest party, unique Afro-Caribbean atmosphere, giant conga through the entire city. Accept in exchange the extreme heat (34-35 °C) and crushing humidity (90%).

The hurricane season (June-November, peak in September) is the main risk — the Cuban Oriente is regularly hit by major hurricanes (Sandy 2012, Matthew 2016, Ian 2022). Baracoa, particularly isolated, can see its access road (La Farola) temporarily closed. If travelling during this period, take out cancellation-cover travel insurance.
