In the Cuban Oriente, travel takes time. The domestic flight is the fastest option to reach the region from Havana (1h30 to Santiago SCU or Holguín HOG, €100-180 return). Within the Oriente, no domestic flights — only by road.
The Viazul bus links Santiago to Baracoa (€15, 5h, 2 daily departures), Santiago to Holguín (€12, 3h), Santiago to Havana (€60, 13-15h). Colectivo taxis (long-distance almendrones, €15-35 per person) are faster and more flexible. Private cars with driver (€120-180 for 4 passengers depending on route) allow photo stops, especially on the spectacular La Farola Santiago-Baracoa road.
Car hire (€50-70/day) is interesting for a full cultural loop Havana → Trinidad → Camagüey → Bayamo → Santiago → Baracoa → return flight from Santiago, over 14-21 days. Beware: Oriente roads are middling to poor, signage limited, occasional fuel rationing.
Within Santiago de Cuba, the historic centre is walked. Bicitaxis (€1-2 per ride) for city trips. For outlying sites (Castillo del Morro, Siboney beach, Santa Ifigenia cemetery, El Cobre sanctuary): private taxi (€10-20 one-way) or organised excursion. In Baracoa, everything is walked in the centre. For beaches (Maguana 20 km) and El Yunque: private taxi or organised excursion.
