Varadero
A 20 km peninsula edged with some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the Caribbean, and the largest concentration of all-inclusive resorts in Cuba — the easy, comfortable beach escape.
Varadero is Cuba's most iconic beach resort — a narrow peninsula 20 km long and at most 1.5 km wide, jutting into the Florida Straits in the north-west of the island, 140 km east of Havana. Discovered by the Spanish in the 16th century and long a simple village of fishermen and salt workers, Varadero took off as a tourist destination in the 1930s when American millionaire Irénée du Pont built his private estate here (today's Du Pont golf club). The Castro revolution of 1959 transformed the peninsula into a popular international tourist destination, mainly serving Canadian, European and Russian travellers.
Today, Varadero is the antithesis of authentic Cuban experience — a closed tourist enclave with over 50 all-inclusive resorts (4 and 5 star), where local population is marginal and daily Cuban life is invisible. That is precisely its proposition: an easy, comfortable beach destination where less adventurous travellers or families with children can enjoy Cuba's wonderful beaches without the constraints (shortages, transport, language) of the rest of the country.
Varadero's beach is its raison d'être: 20 kilometres of uninterrupted fine white sand like sugar, fringed by extraordinarily calm turquoise water (the peninsula is sheltered from Atlantic swells by its configuration), water at 25-29 °C all year. Snorkelling is decent (coral reef 200 m from shore in places), diving heads to the sites of Cárdenas Bay and Cayo Piedras, and water sports (kayak, windsurfing, parasailing, jet ski) are included at most resorts. Beyond the resorts, the Cueva de Saturno (15 km, freshwater underground bathing) and the city of Matanzas (30 km, cultural provincial capital) make for interesting day trips.
What we love
- ✅20 km of white sand beach among the finest in the Caribbean, calm turquoise sea at 25-29 °C
- ✅Largest concentration of 4-5 star all-inclusive resorts in Cuba (50+), all services included
- ✅Juan Gualberto Gómez international airport (VRA) 15 minutes away: direct charter flights from Europe and Canada
- ✅Day trip to Havana possible (140 km, 2h) to combine beach time and culture
- ✅Total safety, complete infrastructure, perfect for families with children and less adventurous travellers
What to know
- ❌No Cuban authenticity: tourist enclave, the real Cuba invisible from the resorts
- ❌Heavy crowds in high season, beaches sometimes saturated in front of the most popular resorts
- ❌Variable resort quality: water and supply shortages possible even in 5-star properties
- ❌Service sometimes slow and impersonal compared to equivalent Mexican or Dominican standards

Our verdict
Varadero is Cuba's easy, comfortable beach option — a tourist enclave remarkably organised around one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. The pitch is clear: all-inclusive, total safety, immediate Caribbean beauty. The flip side is just as clear: no Cuban authenticity, the real Cuba invisible from the resort walls. Our recommendation: combine Varadero (3-5 nights) with Havana (3 nights) and ideally Viñales and Trinidad so your Cuban trip isn't reduced to a sterile beach stay. Favour resorts at the peninsula's tip (Iberostar Selection Varadero, Meliá Internacional, Royalton Hicacos) for the best beaches and 5-star quality.
