Getting around — Rockies

In the Canadian Rockies, a car is essential — public transport is very limited. Rental at Calgary Airport (YYC): CAD 60-100/day depending on category and season, Hertz, Budget, Avis, Enterprise, Discount, Routes agencies (the cheapest). Distances: Calgary-Banff 1h30 (140 km), Banff-Lake Louise 1h (60 km), Lake Louise-Jasper 3h30-4h via Icefields Parkway (232 km), Jasper-Edmonton 4h (370 km).

Winter tires mandatory from November 1 to March 31 on Yoho-Kootenay portion (provincial law British Columbia). In Alberta: strongly recommended but not mandatory. Check with your rental company. Fuel: CAD 1.50-1.90/litre, few stations on Icefields Parkway (Saskatchewan River Crossing is the only one between Lake Louise and Jasper over 232 km — fill up before).

Without a car, limited options: Brewster Express (bus from Calgary Airport to Banff then Lake Louise, CAD 70-90 return), Banff Roam Transit (local buses in Banff and between Banff-Lake Louise, CAD 2-10), SunDog Tours (Calgary-Banff-Jasper, multi-day), Sky Shuttle (Edmonton-Jasper). Possible for 1-2 days in Banff without a car, but very restrictive beyond.

Parks Canada shuttles are mandatory for Moraine Lake since 2023 (CAD 28/person return from Lake Louise Park & Ride, booking reservation.pc.gc.ca 6 months ahead). Lake Louise → Lake Louise shuttle (free, link to main parking) in summer. For Sunshine Meadows in summer, shuttle from lower parking (summit without car).

The National Park Discovery Pass (CAD 89/year for the whole family by car, CAD 23/day/person daily equivalent) is essential — unlimited annual entry to 80 national parks and historic sites in Canada. To purchase online on the Parks Canada site or at park entry kiosks. Without pass, Banff/Jasper entry CAD 11/person/day.

Access from Europe is mainly via Calgary (YYC) — natural gateway to the Rockies. Direct seasonal flights Paris-Calgary (Air Canada in summer, 9h30, €650-1,200 return). Off-season or low prices, flight via Toronto or Montreal (Air Canada, Air France + connection, 12-14h total, €600-1,100 return). Calgary-Banff flight impossible (no airport) — 1h30 road transfer. For Jasper, Edmonton airport (YEG) closer (4h by car) than Calgary (5h).
