British Columbia (5.4 million inhabitants, 944,735 km², Canada's third province by area) is the country's westernmost province — wedged between the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Rocky Mountains chain to the east. Its spectacular geography mixes temperate rainforests (the world's most northern), deep fjords, glaciers, coastal islands (the Salish Sea counts 450 islands, including the immense Vancouver Island), volcanoes (Mount Garibaldi) and the Coast Mountains (coastal range culminating at 4,016 m at Mount Waddington). It's the most ecologically diverse province and one of the country's most beautiful.

Vancouver (2.8 million inhabitants with its metropolitan area) is the economic and cultural metropolis — frequently ranked among the world's most liveable cities (Mercer Quality of Living, world top 5 over the past decade). Wedged between the Pacific Ocean and the North Shore mountains (often snow-capped), with its glass skyline facing the sea and exceptional urban parks, Vancouver is one of North America's most beautiful cities. Assumed multiculturalism (40% Asian origin, 2nd Chinatown in North America after San Francisco), top gastronomy (exceptional Asian-fusion, Pacific seafood), integrated outdoor life (cycling, kayaking, hiking 30 min from downtown).

Whistler (2h north of Vancouver via the Sea-to-Sky Highway, one of Canada's most beautiful scenic drives) is the legendary West Coast ski resort. With its partner Blackcomb, Whistler-Blackcomb forms the 2nd largest ski area in North America (3,307 hectares after Park City in Utah), with 200 runs, 16 summits, 3 ski glaciers up to 2,284 m, and annual snowfall among the most abundant on the continent (9-12 metres). Host of the 2010 Winter Olympics with Vancouver, Whistler is also a major summer destination — mountain biking (Whistler Mountain Bike Park, one of the world's largest), hiking, golf, climbing, lively pedestrian village.

Vancouver Island (32,134 km², 8th largest island in Canada, 870,000 inhabitants) forms the oceanic and wild dimension. Victoria, its capital (and capital of British Columbia), retains a strong British identity — neo-baroque provincial Parliament, Fairmont Empress Hotel (afternoon tea), Butchart Gardens (one of the world's most beautiful, 12 ha), preserved historic centre. The west coast of the island shelters Pacific Rim National Park (Tofino, Ucluelet, Long Beach 16 km of sand and surf, temperate rainforest), orca watching (Killer whales, present May to October, resident and migratory populations), world-class surfing, winter storm watching (mid-November to February). East of Victoria, the Southern Gulf Islands (Salt Spring, Galiano, Mayne) offer off-the-beaten-path travel.

The pitch is clear: combine over 7-10 days Vancouver (3-4 nights) + Whistler (2 nights) + Vancouver Island-Victoria (3-4 nights) for a complete West Canadian trip. Ideally combine with the Canadian Rockies for a 14-day trip.

Frequently asked questions

How many days for British Columbia?+
Minimum 5 days for Vancouver and a Whistler return. 7-10 days for a complete trip: 3-4 nights Vancouver + 2 nights Whistler + 3 nights Vancouver Island-Victoria (and Tofino if surfing/storm watching). In 14 days, combine with the Rockies (Vancouver-Calgary flight 1h30, CAD 200-400 return): 4 nights Vancouver/Whistler + 7 nights Rockies (Banff-Lake Louise-Jasper) + 3 nights Victoria/Tofino. For adventure lovers, add Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands, wild archipelago to the north) or the Sunshine Coast.
Should I go to Whistler in summer or winter?+
Both seasons are exceptional depending on your preferences. Winter (December-April): Whistler-Blackcomb is the 2nd largest ski area in North America (3,307 hectares, 200 runs, 16 summits, 3 ski glaciers), with some of the most abundant snowfall on the continent (9-12 metres/year). Ski pass CAD 150-220/day (Epic Pass recommended for multi-day). Hotels CAD 350-700/night at Christmas-February peak. Host of 2010 Olympics with Vancouver. Summer (June-September): Whistler is one of the world's largest bike parks (Whistler Mountain Bike Park, 200 km of descents, bike rental CAD 100-180/day, pass CAD 75/day). Spectacular alpine hiking (Whistler Peak 2,182 m via cable car, High Note Trail), ziplines, climbing, golf (4 signature courses). The PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola (3.03 km between Whistler and Blackcomb, at 436 m height, world record) runs year-round (CAD 78). Summer: rates 30-40% cheaper.
When to watch orcas in British Columbia?+
Season May to October, peak June to September. Three distinct populations: Southern Resident orcas (75 individuals, salmon eaters, observable Salish Sea between Victoria and San Juan Islands), Northern Resident orcas (300 individuals, further north towards Telegraph Cove and Johnstone Strait), transient orcas (Bigg's killer whales, marine mammal eaters, present year-round but unpredictable). Best spots: Victoria and Vancouver Island east coast (3-5h excursions, CAD 120-180/person, Inner Harbour departures, Eagle Wing, SpringTide, Prince of Whales operators), Tofino (3-4h, CAD 130-160), Telegraph Cove (June-October season, 3h, CAD 130-170, wilder Northern Resident waters). Observation also from shore (East Sooke Park, Otter Point near Sooke, July-August, free with patience). Excursion success rate: 90% at peak season.
How to get to Vancouver Island?+
Three options. BC Ferries Tsawwassen → Swartz Bay (most used, 1h35, CAD 18/person + CAD 67/standard car, departures every 1-2h, mandatory reservation in summer via bcferries.com, CAD 17 reservation fee). Tsawwassen is 1h drive from downtown Vancouver. BC Ferries Horseshoe Bay → Nanaimo (Departure Bay, 1h40): preferable if you arrive from Whistler or the North Shore (Horseshoe Bay 30 min from Vancouver). Vancouver YVR → Victoria YYJ flight (Air Canada, WestJet, Pacific Coastal, 25 min, CAD 150-300 return): fast but no car on arrival. Seaplane (Harbour Air, Vancouver Downtown → Victoria Inner Harbour, 35 min, CAD 200-300, spectacular experience over the Salish Sea). For Tofino, ferry + 3h30 drive from Nanaimo via Port Alberni — plan 5-6h from Vancouver.
Is Vancouver really that rainy?+
Yes, but not year-round. Vancouver is nicknamed "Raincouver" for its very rainy winters (200 mm/month in November-December, 170 mm/month in January, near-constant grey sky from October to March). But summers are surprisingly dry (40 mm/month in July, 35 mm/month in August, drier than Lisbon or Athens in summer), with 18-22 °C by day, low humidity, often clear sky. Spring (May-June) and autumn (September-October) remain pleasant with some rainy days. Tip: favour May-September for a Vancouver trip — you'll discover a radiant city facing the ocean and mountains. If you come in winter, plan waterproof clothing (Gore-Tex, compact umbrella) and accept that rain is part of the experience. Vancouverites live with it — bikes and coffee remain the city's pillars even in the rain.

Our verdict

British Columbia is Canada's most dynamic and one of the most beautiful provinces — Vancouver ranked among the world's most liveable cities, Whistler 2nd North American ski area and 2010 Olympics host, Vancouver Island for orcas and British Victoria. Our advice: 7-10 days for the region, ideally 3-4 nights Vancouver + 2 nights Whistler + 3 nights Victoria/Tofino. Prefer May to October for Vancouver and the island (dry climate, orcas, open parks), or December to April for Whistler skiing. Combine with the Rockies for a complete 14-day West Canadian trip (Vancouver-Calgary flight 1h30, CAD 200-400 return). Direct Paris-Vancouver flight 10h, €650-1,400 return depending on season. Car rental essential (CAD 60-100/day) if you leave Vancouver. For Vancouver Island, book BC Ferries (Tsawwassen → Swartz Bay 1h35, CAD 18/person + CAD 67/car) several weeks ahead in summer.
