Frequently asked questions

How many days for Rio de Janeiro?+
Minimum 3-4 nights to peacefully see essentials. D1: arrival, Copacabana or Ipanema beach, Arpoador sunset. D2: Christ the Redeemer in morning, Santa Teresa in afternoon (bondinho tram, Selarón steps), Lapa evening (samba). D3: Sugarloaf (ideally at sunset for golden light), Botafogo, beach afternoon. D4: historic Centro (Theatro Municipal, Confeitaria Colombo, Real Gabinete Português de Leitura) or Pedra da Gávea hike (6h round-trip, exceptional panorama). 5 nights allow adding a Niterói day (Oscar Niemeyer's Museum of Contemporary Art, extraordinary Rio view), or a favela tour with accredited operator (Rocinha, €35-50), or a Petrópolis excursion (60 km, former imperial city). For Carnival, plan 5-7 nights minimum.
Which neighbourhood to sleep in Rio?+
Favour Zona Sul (south of the city) for safety and tourist practicality. Copacabana (10 km from the bay, 4 km of beach): classic tourist choice, beachfront hotels, 24/7 buzz, full price range (€50-500/night). Ipanema: more chic and calm than Copacabana, iconic beach, gourmet restaurants, 4-5 star hotels (€150-700/night) — Fasano, Janeiro, Caesar Park. Leblon: chic Ipanema extension, more residential, calmer, boutique hotels (€200-700/night). Santa Teresa: bohemian hill neighbourhood, unique vibe, charming pousadas (€80-250/night) — Uber out in the evening. Avoid for sleeping: Centro (deserted and risky at night), Lapa (lively but not ideal for sleeping), favelas (except with specialised operator). Our recommendation for first stay: 4* Copacabana or 4-5* Ipanema.
How to visit Christ the Redeemer?+
Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor, 38 m Art Deco statue, 1,145 t, inaugurated October 12, 1931, classified Seven New World Wonders 2007) is visited atop the Corcovado (710 m). Three access options. Cog railway from Cosme Velho station (Trem do Corcovado, €25/person return, 20 min ascent through Tijuca forest, most iconic but book ahead for high season). Official van from Largo do Machado, Copacabana or Centro (Paineiras-Corcovado, €25/person return, faster). Taxi/Uber + 200 m walk from Paineiras (economical option but requires walking). 1-2h visit on site, breathtaking 360° panorama (Sugarloaf, Copacabana, Maracanã, Guanabara Bay). Recommended hours: opening (8am-9am) to avoid crowds, or 4pm-5pm for golden light. Check weather (no visit if mist on summit). Bring sunscreen, water, hat.
Should you visit a favela in Rio?+
Rio favelas (Rocinha 70,000 inhabitants, Vidigal, Santa Marta, Complexo do Alemão) are not to visit autonomously, even pacified ones. But several serious operators offer respectful guided tours accompanied by residents — it's an ethical format to understand these neighbourhoods' reality (80% of Rio population lives in informal-status favelas). Our recommendation: Favela Tour Rio (Marcelo Armstrong, concept creator, €35-50/person, 3-4h, Rocinha + Vila Canoas, revenue sharing with residents), Favela Tours Brasil (Vidigal, €40/person), Be a Local (Rocinha and Santa Marta, €35-45). Non-pacified favelas (Complexo do Alemão, Manguinhos, Maré) are to absolutely avoid — frequent police operations, real risk. Pacified favelas (Rocinha since 2011, Vidigal since 2011, Santa Marta since 2008) are visitable with operator.
What free or cheap activities in Rio?+
Rio offers many free activities. Beaches Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon (free, chair/parasol rental €5-10/day). Arpoador sunset (rock between Ipanema and Copacabana, daily collective ritual, free). Selarón steps (215 colourful mosaic steps, free, in Lapa). Walk Largo do Machado-Catete and Itamaraty palace (imperial architecture). Real Gabinete Português de Leitura (Neo-Manueline library 1887, free, one of the world's most beautiful libraries). Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (free, exceptional exhibitions). Parc Lage (free, visual arts school-café at Corcovado foot, beautiful Plage café-restaurant). Cheap activities: Tijuca forest (€5 park, free hikes), Maracanã match €8-30, Santa Teresa tram (historic yellow bondinho, €0.5). Tour of samba schools (Mangueira, Salgueiro, €5-20 depending on evening). Our advice: rent a bike (€15-25/day) to follow Copacabana-Ipanema-Leblon cycle path (15 km, flat, magnificent).

Our verdict

Rio de Janeiro is one of the world's most beautiful cities and the unmissable stop of a first Brazil trip — a unique world geographical site (ocean, bay, granite hills, urban forest), global icons (Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, Copacabana, Ipanema), a music and festive culture of overwhelming vitality (samba, bossa nova, Carnival). Our recommendation: plan minimum 3-4 nights to see essentials (Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, Copacabana, Ipanema, Santa Teresa, Arpoador sunset, Lapa evening), ideally 5 nights to add Pedra da Gávea or favela tour with accredited operator. Choose your hotel in Zona Sul — Copacabana for ease (entertainment, restaurants, price range), Ipanema for chic and iconic beach, Leblon for exclusivity, Santa Teresa for bohemian vibe. Travel from April to October for optimal climate (avoid July for Brazilian crowds). For Carnival (4 days late Feb-early March), book 6-12 months ahead. Respect urban safety rules (no jewellery, no phone in street, Uber instead of street taxi, favelas with accredited guide only) — you'll discover one of the world's most beautiful and vibrant cities.
