The optimal window for Rio and the Southeast is the dry season, April to October. Temperatures are ideal in Rio (22-27 °C by day, 16-19 °C at night in austral winter), humidity reduced, sky generally clear, perfect conditions to visit Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf, hike in Tijuca forest, enjoy beaches without crushing heat.
April-May and September-October are ideal shoulder seasons: mild climate, moderate crowds, reasonable rates. June-August corresponds to austral winter in Rio: cooler temperatures (18-23 °C day, 16 °C night), sea at 22-24 °C (a bit cool for swimming), perfect for city visits. July is the Brazilian tourist peak (national school holidays) — rising rates but lively atmosphere.
Austral summer (December-March) is the festive and beach high season: crushing heat (32-35 °C average, peaks at 40 °C), humidity 80-90%, daily late-afternoon tropical storms. Difficult conditions for midday visits but ideal for the beach (sea at 27-29 °C). It's also the period of Réveillon Copacabana (3 million people in white on December 31, world-famous fireworks) and Carnival (4 days late February-early March, in Rio as in Paraty and Búzios).
Avoid Brazilian long weekends (Tiradentes April 21, Labour Day May 1, Independence September 7) in Búzios and Paraty: stormed by Cariocas, rising rates, traffic jams on coastal roads.
