Austral spring (September to November) and austral autumn (March to May) are the best periods for Sydney and the east coast. Ideal temperatures (18-25 °C), clear skies, low humidity, perfect conditions for Blue Mountains hiking and urban visits. October-November see the spectacular jacaranda bloom (purple-flowered trees) throughout Sydney — particularly at Kirribilli, Paddington and the university campus. March-April offer Hunter Valley harvests.
Austral summer (December to February) is the tourist peak — ideal summer climate for beaches (sea at 22-24 °C), vibrant atmosphere with festivals (Sydney Festival January, Mardi Gras LGBT+ in March), New Year's Eve fireworks on the Harbour Bridge among the world's most spectacular. BUT: peak prices (book 3-6 months ahead), crowded beaches, sometimes stifling heat (up to 40 °C in heatwaves), bushfire risk in Blue Mountains.
Austral winter (June to August) is cool and humid (8-16 °C, frequent rain) — less pleasant for beaches but excellent for cultural visits and humpback whale watching from Sydney cliffs (June-October, North Head and South Head). The Vivid Sydney festival (late May to mid-June) illuminates the Opera House and harbour with monumental projections — major cultural event. Hotel rates at the lowest outside July school holidays.
