Itineraries — Sydney east coast

The Sydney and east coast region is the logical introduction to Australia for European travellers. Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD), natural arrival after 22-24h of flying via Singapore or Dubai, world-class infrastructure, easy English, and a concentrate of major Australian experiences accessible in a few days: iconic city, legendary beaches, UNESCO national park hiking, renowned wine region tasting.

For a short stay (4-5 days), the efficient formula combines: 3 nights in Sydney (Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Bondi-Bronte-Coogee coastal walk, Circular Quay-Manly ferry, Royal Botanic Garden, Darling Harbour, The Rocks for history), 1 day excursion to Blue Mountains (Central-Katoomba train, Three Sisters, Scenic World), 1 day at Hunter Valley for wine tastings (guided shuttle from Sydney). This formula gives an excellent east coast overview.

Over a week (7 nights), extend the itinerary: add 2 nights at Byron Bay (Ballina flight, 1h from Sydney, then 30 min transfer) — surf capital, chic hippie atmosphere, legendary beaches, humpback whale watching in season (June-October). Southern alternative: 2 nights at Jervis Bay (3h drive) — among the world's whitest sand (officially Guinness-recognised for Hyams Beach), nearby dolphins, calm preserved atmosphere.

A 10-12 day extension can include Canberra (3h south-west) for federal institutions and the National Gallery of Australia (major Aboriginal art collection), or a northward push towards Brisbane via the Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise for those wanting to continue directly to the Great Barrier Reef.
