The Northern Territory is explored mainly by domestic flight and road trip — distances are immense and the road network limited to a few major axes.
Flight to Ayers Rock Airport (AYQ): Sydney 3h30 (AUD 250-450 return Qantas/Jetstar/Virgin), Melbourne 3h (AUD 250-450), Brisbane 3h30 (AUD 250-450), Cairns 2h30 (AUD 200-400). The airport is 5 km from Yulara/Ayers Rock Resort, free shuttle included for hotel guests (Voyages organises transfers).
Flight to Alice Springs (ASP): Sydney 3h, Melbourne 2h30, Adelaide 2h. Fares AUD 200-400 return depending on season.
Uluru-Kings Canyon-Alice Springs road trip: recommended option for 4-5 days minimum. 4WD or campervan rental at Yulara or Alice Springs (AUD 80-180/day depending on vehicle). Lasseter Highway between Yulara and Erldunda 240 km paved, Stuart Highway from Erldunda to Alice Springs 200 km paved. The Mereenie Loop Road (Watarrka-MacDonnell Ranges) requires 4WD and special permit (AUD 15, available at Yulara, Kings Canyon Resort or Alice Springs).
Transcontinental train The Ghan: Adelaide-Darwin via Alice Springs, 2,979 km in 3 days/2 nights. Signature Australian experience (AUD 1,800-3,500/person in cabin, AUD 4,000-5,500 in Gold Service). Weekly departures. Option to transform travel into experience in its own right.
Greyhound bus: Sydney-Alice Springs (slow, 38h, AUD 180-280) or Adelaide-Alice Springs (20h, AUD 150-220) — very slow backpacker option.
On site at Yulara/Ayers Rock Resort, free shuttles circulate between hotels, shopping centre and Uluru observation points (sunrise and sunset) — no need for car. For Base Walk and Kata Tjuta, paid shuttles (AUD 35-50) or organised tour.
Left-hand driving is mandatory. Roads generally good but little traffic, watch for kangaroos at sunrise and sunset (frequent collisions). Full tank at every service station (sometimes 200-300 km between two pumps). Water (4 L/person/day minimum) and paper map essential (very limited mobile network outside Yulara and Alice Springs).
