Great Barrier

When to go — Great Barrier

Austral winter (June to September) is without possible contest the best period to visit the Great Barrier Reef — paradoxically since it is winter in Europe, but evident under Australian tropics. Advantages are multiple: perfect temperatures (20-26 °C by day, 15-18 °C at night), low humidity (60-70%), generally clear sky, rare rain, calm and clear sea. Underwater visibility reaches its maximum (20-30 m) — dream season for diving and snorkelling. And above all, no box jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri): free swimming, snorkelling without mandatory stinger suit.

Additionally, it is humpback whale watching season (July to September, sometimes October) — cetacean migration to tropical waters for breeding. Specific excursions are possible from Cairns, Port Douglas and Hervey Bay (slightly south, considered one of the world's best whale watching spots).

The trade-off: it is also the tourist high season with peak hotel rates (Port Douglas resorts AUD 350-800/night, Hamilton Island AUD 400-1,200/night), recommended bookings 3-6 months ahead for the best hotels and excursions, and Australian school holidays (two weeks in July) adding to the crowd.

May and October are excellent shoulder seasons: still very pleasant climate (22-28 °C), calm sea, moderate crowds outside school holidays, rates down 15-30% from June-August. Caution in October, first box jellyfish can appear in the far north (Cape Tribulation, Port Douglas) — check before swimming. Early cyclone risk possible from late October.

Avoid November to April: wet tropical season with omnipresent lethal box jellyfish (beach swimming limited to protection nets, stinger suit mandatory for snorkelling), serious cyclone risk (Queensland is regularly hit — cyclone Yasi 2011, cyclone Debbie 2017, cyclone Jasper 2023), crushing humidity (80-90%, suffocating feel), frequent tropical rain (thunderous showers, sometimes several consecutive days), underwater visibility sometimes reduced after rain. Only advantages: lowest rates (excluding Christmas/New Year), warm sea (28-30 °C), lush vegetation.
