Great Barrier

Itineraries — Great Barrier

The Great Barrier Reef is Australia's signature nature experience and one of the planet's greatest natural jewels. UNESCO-listed since 1981, it stretches 2,300 km along Queensland's north-east coast, formed of more than 2,900 distinct reefs and 900 islands. It is the world's largest living ecosystem — the only biological structure visible from space. Biodiversity is extraordinary: 1,500 fish species, 411 hard coral species, 134 shark and ray species, 30 whale and dolphin species, 6 of the world's 7 sea turtle species, dugongs, giant manta rays.

The main tourist zone extends through tropical Queensland between Cairns (gateway, international airport CNS) and the Whitsundays (74 paradise islands, 600 km south). Cairns is the logical base — 160,000-inhabitant city, vibrant, mature tourism infrastructure, huge excursion choice. Port Douglas (1h north) is the chic and calm alternative — refined village, premium resorts, direct access to Outer Reef and Daintree Rainforest (UNESCO, world's oldest rainforest, 180 million years). Hamilton Island and Airlie Beach are the bases for the Whitsundays — sailing, snorkelling, iconic Whitehaven Beach.

For a 4-5 day minimum stay recommended. Classic formula: 2-3 nights at Cairns or Port Douglas (1 day Outer Reef by catamaran, 1 day Daintree Rainforest or Cape Tribulation), 2-3 nights at Whitsundays (Hamilton Island or Airlie Beach, sailing cruise and snorkelling at Whitehaven Beach). For serious divers, the signature experience is the liveaboard cruise to Coral Sea Reefs (Osprey Reef, 4-7 days, AUD 2,000-4,000).

The ecological dimension is today crucial. The Great Barrier has experienced six massive bleaching episodes since 1998 (most recent 2024), linked to ocean warming. According to scientists, 50% of corals have disappeared since 1995. Visiting the reef today remains an extraordinary experience — but tinged with urgency. Choose Reef Tourism Certified operators (ecological commitment), never touch coral, use reef-safe sunscreen (oxybenzone-free).
