The Cultural Triangle extends across the geographical and historical heart of Sri Lanka, on the dry plains of the north-centre, between the Hill Country highlands to the south and the Jaffna peninsula far to the north. Five main sites structure the exploration: Sigiriya and Dambulla to the east, Polonnaruwa furthest east, Anuradhapura furthest north-west and Kandy to the south, at the junction of the plains and the mountains.
For a short trip (3-4 days), focus on the tight triangle of Sigiriya-Polonnaruwa-Dambulla, no more than 1h30 apart. You can add Kandy as a transition to the Hill Country. This compact itinerary lets you see the essentials of the Sinhalese Buddhist heritage without rushing, leaving margin for safaris at Minneriya and pauses at guesthouses beside the tanks.
With five or six days, integrate Anuradhapura, more outlying but essential. Sri Lanka's historic capital for thirteen centuries preserves giant dagobas and a unique spiritual atmosphere around the sacred Bodhi tree (Sri Maha Bodhi), a cutting from the tree under which the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment — it is the oldest documented planted tree in the world (3rd century BC). One night in Anuradhapura allows you to attend the evening ceremony at the foot of the Sri Maha Bodhi, a particularly moving moment of contemplation.
With seven days and more, add Mihintale (where Buddhism was introduced to Ceylon in 247 BC, 13 km from Anuradhapura), an extended safari at Minneriya and Kaudulla, and a more thorough exploration of Kandy with a night in an outlying tea plantation. The Cultural Triangle then combines perfectly with the Hill Country (Kandy-Ella by train) and the South Coast (Galle, Mirissa) for a grand Sri Lankan circuit of 14 to 21 days.
