Marigot

Things to do — Marigot

Marigot is ideally discovered by starting with the traditional market (Wednesday and Saturday mornings, 6 am to 1 pm): strolling between stalls, Creole breakfast in a lolo (eggs, accras, milk bread, local coffee — €8-15), purchases of exotic fruits and Creole spices. Photo of fishermen selling their morning catch.

Climb to Fort Saint-Louis (15-20 min walk from the centre, free, open 7d/7): 360° panoramic view over the bay, Anguilla and the Dutch side. Ideal at sunrise (around 6:30 am in winter, 6 am in summer) or late afternoon (4-5 pm, golden light). Allow 30 min on site.

Visit the Wall House Museum (Rue de l'Eglise, €8 adult, €4 child, open 9 am-1 pm and 3-6 pm except Sunday): 5 rooms dedicated to Amerindian history (Arawaks, Caribs), Franco-Dutch colonisation, slavery and the 1848 abolition, and contemporary Saint Martin identity. Allow 1-1h30.

Stroll in the Rue de la République and Rue de la Liberté: blue-and-white Creole houses, crafts shops (basketry, batik, local jewellery), art galleries. At the end of the street, the Place du Marché and the West Indies Mall (chic shopping centre, fashion boutiques, jewellery).

Lunch on the Marina Royale: La Belle Epoque (refined French), Le Bar de la Mer (brasserie), Tropicana (Creole). Yacht observation (international megayachts in high season).

For enthusiasts: catamaran cruise from Marina Royale (1-day excursion to Anguilla, Tintamarre or Saint Barth, €130-180/person), ferry to Anguilla (25 min crossing, €30 return, Shoal Bay beach on the British side), paddleboarding in the protected bay.
