Saint-Jean

Things to do — Saint-Jean

The beach experience is the heart of Saint-Jean. Arrive early (before 10 am) for a sun lounger without booking at public beach clubs. Choose your side: Pelican Beach (west, calm lagoon, ideal family) or Eden Rock beach (east, more lively, plane view). Swimming in the turquoise lagoon, paddle (€15-25/hour), kayak.

Plane observation at SBH airfield is free and spectacular. Several flights per day in high season (St Barth Commuter, Winair, Tradewind Aviation). Landings: steep descent above the Tourmente hill, road flyover at 10 m, 650 m runway, braking 10 m from the beach. Best moments: 10-11 am (arrivals) and 3-5 pm (departures). Several spots: from the beach, from the road above, from the Eden Rock terrace.

Eden Rock: visit (establishment open to non-residents for dining). Aperitif or dinner at the On The Rocks bar (gastronomic, €150-250/person, to book 1-2 weeks ahead, panoramic view over the bay at sunset — one of the world's most beautiful aperitifs). Casual Sand Bar for lunches (€50-100/person).

Beach clubs: Nikki Beach (festive, legendary Sunday brunch, €80-150/person, to book), La Plage Beach (at Tom Beach Hôtel, elegant, €50-120/person).

Shopping: La Villa Créole (Bagatelle Saint-Jean, fashion and jewellery boutiques) and Pelican Beach Shopping Mall (Vanita Rosa, Calypso, La Cave de Saint-Jean). Open 10 am-1 pm and 4-7 pm. Integrated chic restaurants.

Additional activities: surfing at neighbouring Anse des Cayes (5 min by car, 1-2 m winter waves), kitefoil at Grand Cul-de-Sac (10 min, constant winds), diving with Splash or West Indies Dive (Gustavia centre, try-dive €80-110, exploration €70-95).
