Punta Cana

Over 250 4-5 star all-inclusive resorts spread over 30 km of beaches among the Caribbean's finest — the most polished Caribbean destination for families and couples seeking a comfortable beach stay.

4.50

Punta Cana and the East is the Dominican Republic's main tourist region — a coastline of over 60 kilometres stretching from the easternmost tip (Cabo Engaño) down to Bayahibe in the south, concentrating most of the country's all-inclusive beach offering. Over 250 4- and 5-star resorts, two international airports (Punta Cana PUJ and La Romana LRM), white sand beaches among the Caribbean's finest, ultra-developed tourist infrastructure: this is where most European, American and Canadian packages to the Dominican Republic are sold.

The region divides into three distinct hubs. Bávaro-Punta Cana (the eastern tip, where PUJ airport and the majority of resorts sit) is the tourist backbone — 30 km of continuous fine white sand beach lined with extraordinarily calm turquoise sea (protected by coral reefs 100-500 m offshore), over 200 hotels, full infrastructure, maximum accessibility. The default choice for a first stay. Cap Cana (just south of Punta Cana) is the luxury exclusive enclave — Eden Roc, Sanctuary Cap Cana, Hyatt Ziva, Margaritaville Island Reserve, Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, private marina. Calmer, more upscale vibe. Bayahibe (1h15 further south, facing Saona Island and Parque Nacional del Este) is the alternative hub — fewer resorts (15-20), preserved fishing village, ideal base for excursions to Saona and Catalina islands, more authentic and exclusive vibe.

The pitch is clear: these destinations are built for the easy, comfortable beach stay, with no logistical worry. Direct charter flights from Europe, included transfers, decent to very good all-inclusive resorts, exceptional beaches, total safety within hotel grounds. Most stays sell as packages (charter flight + transfer + 1-week resort) at €700-2,500 per person depending on season and category. The flip side: no visible Dominican authenticity from inside a resort — leaving the enclaves is mandatory to meet the real country.

Frequently asked questions

Bávaro, Cap Cana or Bayahibe: which to choose?+
Bávaro for ease and variety — 200+ resorts, 30 km of beach, complete infrastructure, direct charter flights (PUJ 15 min away), wide price range (€700-2,500 per week package). Ideal for families with children and first stays. Cap Cana for luxury — more exclusive enclave just south, upscale resorts (Eden Roc, Sanctuary, Hyatt Ziva), signature golf course, private marina. From €1,800-3,500 per week. Calmer vibe. Bayahibe for preserved authenticity — charming fishing village, only 15-20 resorts, ideal base for Saona Island and Parque Nacional del Este. More authentic but more limited infrastructure (LRM 30 min away, longer transfers from PUJ: 1h15).
What is sargassum and how to avoid it?+
Sargassum is a floating brown algae that washes up seasonally (May-October, peak July-September) on the Dominican Republic's east coast — Bávaro and Punta Cana are most exposed. The phenomenon is unpredictable year to year and day to day. Large resorts have morning mechanical cleaning for their beach stretch, but smell and appearance can degrade some days. How to avoid: travel December to April (minimal sargassum), choose a resort with daily cleaning commitment, prefer Cap Cana (less affected than central Bávaro), Bayahibe (south, less affected), Saona Island (excursion, unaffected beach) or the north coast (Puerto Plata, Cabarete, Samaná, much less affected).
How do you get to Saona Island from Punta Cana?+
Saona Island (Parque Nacional del Este, south-east) is the region's flagship excursion and one of the world's most beautiful beaches. Two options: catamaran excursion from Bávaro (€60-90 per person, full day 8am-5pm, hotel transfer + catamaran with entertainment + natural pool stop + lunch on Saona + fast speedboat return) — convenient but formulaic and crowded. Speedboat excursion from Bayahibe (€50-70 per person, shorter day but more direct island access, more exclusive feel). Book on site at your resort activities desk or directly at Bayahibe in the morning (cheaper and more authentic). Avoid high season (December-February) to not find 800 people on the beach.
What are the best resorts at Bávaro and Cap Cana?+
At Bávaro (upper 5-star segment): Iberostar Grand Bávaro (5-star, adults only), Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana (5-star, maximum entertainment), Royalton Punta Cana (5-star, Diamond Club premium segment), Excellence Punta Cana (5-star, adults only), Paradisus Palma Real and Paradisus Punta Cana (Meliá, 5-star, Royal Service segments). Standard 5-star: Iberostar Punta Cana, Bahia Principe Grand, Riu Palace Bavaro. At Cap Cana (luxury segment): Eden Roc at Cap Cana (upper 5-star, Relais & Châteaux), Sanctuary Cap Cana (5-star adults only), Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana (5-star family), Margaritaville Island Reserve Cap Cana (recent, premium family). Check 2024-2025 reviews — quality varies by management.
What off-beach excursions from Punta Cana?+
Several options to leave the enclave. The most iconic: Saona Island excursion (€60-90 full day). Others: Hoyo Azul at Scape Park (turquoise cenote 14 km away, €60-80 with other park activities), Macao Beach (public beach to the north, more authentic, 30 km from Bávaro, quad rental or taxi), Santo Domingo excursion (full day €70-100/person, 8am-9pm, condensed), Samaná whale excursion (January-March only, full day €120-150, 5h round-trip drive, tiring but unforgettable), helicopter flyover (€180-250, views over beaches and Saona Island), diving and snorkelling (€50-80 the outing), Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve (jungle cenotes, €30-40), Higüey village (Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia basilica, 35 km, authentic cultural excursion).

Our verdict

Punta Cana and the East is the Dominican Republic's tourist backbone — the world capital of Caribbean all-inclusive, organised around 30 km of exceptional beaches and ultra-polished tourism infrastructure. The pitch is clear and well executed: comfortable beach stay, total safety, direct charter flights, maximum accessibility. Our recommendation: for a first Dominican trip, choose Bávaro for ease, Cap Cana for luxury or Bayahibe for preserved authenticity and Saona Island access. Always combine with 2-3 nights in Santo Domingo (UNESCO) so you don't reduce your trip to a beach enclave. Avoid summer for sargassum and hurricanes, prefer December-May. Always check recent reviews for resort quality (the Dominican Republic shows significant variation between properties).
