The optimal window for the Peruvian Amazon is the dry season, May to October. Rains are then reduced (50-100 mm/month versus 200-350 mm/month in wet season), forest trails accessible, hikes easier, mosquitoes less aggressive (but always present). Wildlife concentrates around remaining water points, facilitating observation. Parrot clay licks in Tambopata are also more active in dry season (June-September, dawn observation of hundreds of parrots and parakeets eating mineral clay).
June-August are the driest and busiest months (European and North American school holidays, high season combined with Cusco-Machu Picchu). Lodge rates +20-30%, book 2-3 months ahead. May and September-October offer an excellent compromise: still-favorable conditions, declining crowds, more accessible rates.
The wet season (December to March, peak January-February) is an often-underestimated period but with specific advantages. High water levels allow maximum navigation in tributaries and igapós (flooded forests, unique ecosystem where trees remain partly submerged 4-6 months/year). Wildlife is particularly visible from boats (very active pink dolphins, caimans, birds). Rates drop to -30 to -40%, lodges are little frequented. The flip side: frequent tropical rains (sometimes 8h non-stop), difficult forest hikes (mud, peak mosquitoes), stifling heat and crushing humidity (85-95%).
Our recommendation for a first trip: travel in May-June or September-October (dry season, moderate crowds, accessible rates, optimal conditions). For a more adventurous experience focused on navigation and observation from boat: December-February (high waters, rock-bottom rates).
Iquitos (further north, at 3.7° south latitude) has a more tropical climate without real dry season — more uniform rains year-round, stable temperatures 26-32 °C. Tambopata and Manu (latitude 12-13° south) are more marked by seasonality. Compatibility with Andean dry season: Tambopata combines perfectly with Cusco-Machu Picchu in June-August. Iquitos with Lima in December-March.
