The South Island has a temperate-oceanic alpine climate with sharply contrasting conditions depending on season and altitude. It's a four-season destination with much sharper seasonality than the North Island.
The austral summer (December to March) is the main season: 15-22 °C temperatures in Queenstown and Aoraki, 18-25 °C in Christchurch and Marlborough, long days (15-16 h of light in December-January). This is the only season when all Great Walks are fully accessible (Milford, Routeburn, Kepler, Abel Tasman) in standard equipment. Peak season: saturated Queenstown, full Milford Sound cruises, 4-6 months advance booking, peak prices.
Autumn (March-April) is our preferred period for the South Island: magical golden light, blazing foliage at Arrowtown and Wanaka (imported poplars and beeches), Central Otago harvests (Pinot Noir), 20-30% lower rates, much reduced crowds. Great Walks remain largely accessible to the end of April.
Spring (October-November) offers specific advantages: full waterfalls in Fiordland (spectacular Milford Sound after winter rains), residual snow on Aoraki/Mt Cook, newborn lambs in pastures, blossom. But mountain conditions are more unstable.
The austral winter (June to September) is the ski season — Queenstown (Coronet Peak, The Remarkables) and Wanaka (Cardrona, Treble Cone) offer one of the best ski seasons in the southern hemisphere. It's also the season for spectacular starry skies at Aoraki/Mackenzie (Dark Sky Reserve), whales at Kaikoura (sperm whales year-round, blue whales June-July) and hotel rates at their lowest outside ski resorts (-40 to -50% vs summer). But many alpine roads can be closed or with chains mandatory, Milford Sound cruises can be cancelled by strong winds, and most Great Walks are closed or dangerous without winter equipment.
