Grande Terre runs on New Caledonia's tropical-oceanic climate, tempered by its latitude and south-east trade winds.
The austral spring (September to November) is the best period: perfect temperatures (22-28 °C), low humidity, clear skies, calm seas. The dream season for hiking, beaches, lagoon excursions. The spectacular flamboyant blooming in October-November brightens the roads of Nouméa and the west coast — a unique visual spectacle.
The austral winter (May to August) is the driest and coolest season (18-24 °C by day, 12-16 °C at night). It is the humpback whale season (July-September) in the Grand Sud — the signature experience of the period.
The austral summer (December to April) brings heat (28-32 °C), humidity (75-85%), frequent tropical rains and cyclone risk. Period to avoid if possible.
Best months: September, October, November.
