Grande Terre offers a diversity of activities over 4-10 days.
In Nouméa (2 days): Port Moselle market early in the morning, Anse Vata and Bay of Citrons (beaches), Tjibaou Cultural Centre (Renzo Piano 1998), Lagoons aquarium, New Caledonia museum and maritime museum, historic centre. In the evening: Bay of Citrons food trucks or fine dining restaurants on Anse Vata.
Lagoon excursion from Nouméa (1 day): boat trip to the islets (Maître, Amédée — emblematic lighthouse, Larégnère), with snorkelling on coral gardens. €90-150/person with lunch.
Grand Sud and Blue River Park (1 day): 60 km north-east of Nouméa (1 h 15 drive). Park entry 400 XPF/person, bike rental 1,200 XPF. Pont Pérignon trail, Grand Kaori trail (humid forest), Yaté drowned forests. Allow a full day.
West coast and Bourail (1-2 days): 160 km north of Nouméa (2 h 30 drive). Roche Percée, Turtle Bay, Poé beach (15 km of white sand), Ténia islet, Bourail museum.
East coast and Hienghène (2-3 days): 380 km north-east of Nouméa (5 h 30 drive, in several stages). Hienghène peaks, Tao waterfall, tribal beaches.
Hikes: GR NC1 (110 km hiking trail crossing the central range — 7 days), Mont Panié (1,628 m, 2 days, demanding hike), Mont Humboldt.
Humpback whale watching (July-September): boat excursions from Nouméa or Prony, €100-150/person, full day. No swimming with whales in New Caledonia.
