Grande Terre organises around the capital Nouméa (a third of the population) and four main natural regions: the mining Grand Sud (Blue River Park, Prony Bay), the broussard west coast (Bourail, Poé, La Foa), the Kanak humid east coast (Hienghène, Poindimié), and the wild north (Koumac, Poum). For a classic 4-5 day itinerary on Grande Terre, the efficient programme combines: 2 nights in Nouméa, 1 night in the Grand Sud, 1-2 nights on the west coast in Bourail.
For a deeper stay (7-10 days on Grande Terre), the itinerary naturally extends to the east coast (Hienghène and its legendary rocky peaks) and the north. This extension delivers a deeper immersion in Kanak culture and offers much less frequented landscapes.
Note that Grande Terre is large: Nouméa-Hienghène 380 km (5 h 30 drive). Plan a car rental (€40-80/day) and plan the distances. The roads are in good condition but winding.
