Cinque Terre

Things to do — Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre combine nature, walking, food and Mediterranean dolce vita in a setting that has genuinely no equivalent in Europe.

Walking is the headline activity. The Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail, GR 5) links the five villages over roughly 12 km, with significant climbs around Corniglia. The most iconic section is the Via dell'Amore, the path carved into the cliff between Riomaggiore and Manarola (800 m), partially reopened after years of safety closures. The Vernazza-Corniglia stretch is the most physical (a 300 m climb) and offers the most spectacular panoramas. For experienced walkers, the Alta Via delle Cinque Terre (ridge trail, about 40 km over two days) gives you an aerial view of the entire coast.

Each village deserves slow exploration. Vernazza is often singled out as the most beautiful: a natural harbour ringed by cliffs, a medieval castle and that classic view from the Doria tower. Manarola is the sunset star — the stacked houses on their rocky promontory reflect in the sea at golden hour with a clarity photographers spend years chasing. Riomaggiore, furthest south, is the most accessible from La Spezia and the busiest in the evening. Monterosso al Mare is the only one with a real sandy and pebble beach (Fegina), ideal for a full day of bathing with parasols. Corniglia, perched 100 m above the sea, is the quietest and least crowded — its alleys still hold the atmosphere of an authentic Ligurian village.

Boat excursions from Monterosso or La Spezia let you see the five villages from the sea — the best angle for photographs. Small craft of 6-12 passengers run commented tours with swim stops in coves you can't reach on foot (2-3 hours, around €25-35 per person).

Ligurian gastronomy is an attraction in its own right. Home-made pesto alla genovese (a completely different creature from the pesto you find at home) served on trofie al pesto, the soft focaccia from the morning bakery, marinated Gulf anchovies, fritto misto in the harbour-front restaurants — every village has its trattoria di fiducia, the one that regulars book a season ahead. The amber Sciacchetrà, sipped after dinner in a local cantina, closes the meal beautifully.
