The signature experience is the Taj Mahal visit at sunrise. Optimal plan: departure from your hotel at 5:30am, arrival at East Gate (fastest foreigner entrance) at 5:50am, opening 6am (winter) or 5:30am (summer), security check, crossing of Charbagh Gateway (monumental red sandstone entrance gate), descent to Lotus Pond (central reflection pool). Sunrise photography (6:15-7:30am, golden light, white marble turning pink). Climb to marble platform (mandatory shoe removal — fabric foot covers provided for 100 INR). Platform tour to observe minarets at 4 corners, parchin kari inlays, Quranic calligraphies in Charmandi black marble. Inner mausoleum entry (additional 200 INR): white marble inlaid cenotaphs of Mumtaz Mahal centred and Shâh Jahân offset west.
The side buildings: mosque (west of mausoleum, red sandstone, functional, faces Mecca), jawab ("reply" in Arabic, east, architecturally identical to mosque but no religious function — simple architectural counterpoint for symmetry).
Agra Fort UNESCO (2 km from Taj, accessible by electric shuttle 5 INR or taxi 200-400 INR) is the essential complementary stop — 2h visit. Mehtab Bagh (Mughal garden on north Yamuna bank, facing Taj) is the sunset signature experience. Fatehpur Sikri UNESCO (40 km west of Agra, half-day excursion).
