The Society Islands run on the tropical-oceanic climate of French Polynesia, with a sharply differentiated dry season (austral winter, May to October) and wet season (austral summer, November to April) that shape the travel experience.
The dry season (May to October) is the great tourist season for the Society Islands. Temperatures are perfect (24-28 °C), the south-east trade winds cool the lagoons and terraces, the sky is generously blue and rain is rare and brief. The lagoon waters are calm and turquoise, underwater visibility reaches 30-40 metres. This is the dream season for overwater bungalows on Bora Bora and Moorea, for lagoon excursions, snorkelling and photography. It is also humpback whale season around Moorea and Tahiti from July to October — a unique experience of supervised in-water swimming with these sea giants (€180-250/person).
A major cultural event falls in July: the Heiva i Tahiti, the biggest Polynesian cultural festival, held in Papeete over three weeks (generally late June to mid-July). Traditional dance competitions, songs, va'a outrigger races, ancestral sports — a magical moment to discover living Polynesian culture. The downside: this is also the peak attendance and pricing period.
The wet season (November to April) brings frequent tropical rain — thunderous afternoon showers, sometimes several rainy days in a row. The temperature remains pleasant (28-32 °C) but humidity climbs to 75-85%. It is also the cyclone season with a moderate but real risk from January to March. The upsides: hotel rates 25-40% lower outside year-end holidays, very low crowds, lush vegetation after the rains, full waterfalls on Tahiti and Moorea.
May-June and September-October offer the best balance: near-paradise weather, still manageable crowds, intermediate pricing. Our recommendation for a balanced discovery of the Society Islands.
